Homily Points

3rd Sunday of Lent – A

General. Today’s Liturgy reminds us of the saving power of Jesus only if we recognise our sins and make repentance for them. This could be done, especially during this Lenten season, by fasting, praying and almsgiving, which together purify us to celebrate the Paschal Triduum and the Paschal Feast which is now fast approaching.

Exodus. God’s people had a very short memory of the wonders God wrought with them. When struck by thirst, they murmured against Moses, having preferred to remain in Egypt with the idols rather than being granted their freedom and being led into God’s promised land. Yet God showed his mercy for these people by filling them with gushing water out of the rock, a sign of God’s abundance of grace coming out of Jesus, the rock.

Epistle to the Romans. Jesus died for us sinners, at a time when we were most averse to God. We now feel justified by faith and God’s love which we have acquired through Jesus. Having witnessed all these good things wrought in us by God, we have Hope in everlasting life and in achieving God’s glory within us through His grace. This life could only be achieved through our personal resurrection which we can join to Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.

St John. Jesus would like to give to each and every one of us living water, the same as he was ready to give to the Samaritan woman. Many a time we fail to recognize Christ’s presence in our midst through his preachers, priests and good tiding bearers. Yet in the same way as Jesus told the Samaritan woman ‘I am he’ so does he manifest himself to us as the Saviour, the Son of God. This Sunday is the time for a solid catechesis on the reality of Christ in our lives, what sin does to us and salvation which we can obtain by calling the name of Jesus and following his Gospel.
