28th June – Solemnity of St Peter and St Paul

Mass of the Vigil

General. This feast is a major feast for the Church as it commemorates the consecration of this day with the martyrdom of the Apostles Peter and Paul. For the Church of Christ, the holy blood of these two princes has shed light on the whole wide world as two great luminaries which gave out their light in the darkness of paganism. Peter, who held the power of the keys, made glorious victory by means of the cross, whilst Paul, who imparted words of life to the nations, ran the ultimate race towards Christ and gained life through the sword. Acts of the Apostles. St Peter was full of the spirit of Jesus Christ and he forcefully ordered the cripple that in the Holy Name of Jesus of Nazareth, he rises up and walks. The cripple started walking indeed, and he praised God with everybody, a living witness of the power of Jesus.

Epistle to the Galatians. Even Paul is a living witness of the power of Jesus as the Good Tidings were directly revealed to him by Jesus. Since that day God had called him by His grace, Paul did not cease labouring in God’s vineyard to bring the Good News about His Son Jesus to the nations.

St John. Whosoever follows Jesus is bound to accomplish the works entrusted to him with great faith. God shall also be faithful to him by making him accompany His Son Jesus in his suffering and Passion, which indeed is a gift of love. That is the only sure way a Christian can obtain his resurrection from the dead.
