14th August – Solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven

Mass of the Vigil

General. As Mary was the Immaculate Mother of God her creator, she could certainly not have been left to taste the corruption of her body through death. She has, for that reason and according to Eastern tradition, passed over to the Lord during a sweet sleep which He gave her while assuming up her body and soul into heaven. This is an important lesson for us all, indeed: sin breeds bodily corruption, whereas holiness fosters wholesomeness. See Feastday Profile

First Book of Chronicles. In the same manner as David has placed in the ark the tablets of the Commandments, which are God’s Word for Israel and all humanity, Mary has in resemblance borne Jesus, the Word of God, in her womb for nine months. The concept here is the same as that in St John’s Prologue to his Gospel where Jesus is the Word.

First Epistle to the Corinthians. We have achieved our victory over death through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. According to St Paul, we have already achieved incurruptibility and immortality when we put on the new body given to us by baptism.

St Luke. Jesus speaks out clearly when he says that blessed are those who listen to God’s Word and keep it. The Word of God is to be found in the Commandments and in Jesus’ words and doings on earth.
