You taught me first aid, but it was you who needed the care. You helped me love Jesus, and told me God was everywhere. You made me feel glad, and taught me the good and bad. A teacher you may be, but a hero in disguise to me. I never was made a fool in your health class at school. You saved me from doom, even when I felt some gloom. Your whole life was so fun, but Cancer you couldn't overcome. A teacher you may be, but a hero in disguise to me. I remembered you, no matter where I flew. You're the one in my heart, but now I'm torn apart. Now that you're gone, you'd have wanted me to go on. A teacher you may be, but a hero in disguise to me. I'll miss you Fred Goodman like a true friend only can. You never had a chance to finish life's only dance. But no matter where I go, I will always know, A teacher you may be, but a hero in disguise to me. A hero in disguise to me. |

Written on December 5, 1996, on the day a favorite teacher of mine died from cancer. I was a freshman in high school, and I found out after being picked up from play practice that he had died. I was numb. Later that night, when I began to realize what had happened, I wrote this in memory of him, and read it at a memorial service the next day at school. In memory of Fred Goodman. Thank you for pointing me in a direction I had never known existed. |
