'The face of Elrond was ageless, neither old nor young, though in it was written the memory of many things both glad and sorrowful. His hair was dark as the shadows of twilight, and upon it was set a circlet of silver; his eyes were grey as a clear evening, and in them was a light like the light of stars. Venerable he seemed as a king crowned with many winters, and yet hale as a tried warrior in the fulness of strength. He was the Lord of Rivendell and mighty amoung both Elves and Men.'

Elrond was born to Eärendil the Mariner and Elwing, granddaughter of Beren and Luthien, in FA 543. He was given the choice of the half-elven, to be a human of elf. Elrond code to be an elf, and his twin brother Elros chose to be human. Elrond became a powerful Elf-lord and established Imaldris, or Rivendell in the common tounge.

During the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, Elrond served as the herald for Gil-Galad. Gil-Galad was killed in the battle but he gave Elrond Vilya, the Ring of Sapphire, before he died. Elrond married Celebrian, daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn, and they had three children, Elrohir, Elladan and Arwen. Celebrain was taken by Orcs and tortured endlessly by them until her rescue by Elrohir and Elladan. She passed into Valinor soon after this.

Elrond played a part in the War of the Ring, by appointing the Fellowship to destroy the One Ring. His daughter, Arwen, married Aragorn when he assumed the throne of Gondor, and remained in Middle Earth to die as a mortal. Elrond passed over the sea after the War of the Ring.

His role in 'The Silmarillion'

When the sons of Fëanor came down upon the the exiles of Gondolin and the remant of Doriath, Elrond and his brother were taken captive. The sons of Fëanor won the day, as the ships of Cídan and Gil-galad arrived too late. Malgor took pity on Elros and Elrond, and the brothers were kept alive. When the Eldar began to depart, Elrond remained and was numbered among the Eldar, and Elros, who chose to live among Men, became the first King of the Dunedain. Elrond lived in Eregion, along with Gil-galad the High King. Relations between the Elves on Lindon and the Dwarves of Moria were good.

During the war between Sauron and the Elves, Eregion was laid waiste and the doors of Moria were shut. A stronghold during this time was the Elven refuge, Imaldris. This was established by Elrond Halfelven, and it held out against the Enemy. During the Last Alliance of Elves and Men, Elrond served as the herald to Gil-galad. When Sauron fell, Isildur did not heed the counsel of Elrond and Círdan, who gave the advice that the One Ring should be cast into the fires of Mount Doom.

In the movie Elrond is played by Hugo Weaving.
