'Very fair was her face, and her long hair was like a river of gold. Slender and tall she was in her white robe girt with silver; but strong she seemed and stern as steel, a daughter of kings.'

Éowyn was born to Éomund, chief Marchal of the Mark, and Théodwyn, sister of King Théoden, in TA 2995. She and her brother, Éomer, were raised by Théoden in Edoras following the death of their parents. Like other Rohirrim women of noble birth, Éowyn was trained to be a shieldmaiden. She was considered equal to many of the men in swordmanship.

When Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas travel to see King Théoden, in his palace in Meduseld, Éowyn first meets Aragorn, the heir of Kings. She fell in love with Aragorn, but her love was not returned. From this, and her longing for the glory of battle, Éowyn disguises herself as the soldier Dernhelm, and travels to the battle of Pelennor Fields. She takes with her Merry, who had also been commanded to remail behind. During the battle she fought by Théoden, and when all others fled the Witch-king, Eowyn remained. After Théoden was struck down, Eowyn revealed herself to the Witch-king, and meeting the prophecy that no man shall kill the Witch-king, she slew him along with Merry's help.

Éowyn was injured in the fight, and were taken to the House of Healing in Minas Tirith, where she faced death. She was treated by Aragorn during his stay in the city, but did not recover in time to travel with Aragorn's army to the gates of Mordor. In the House of Healing she met Faramir, son of the old steward of Gondor, and she fell in love with him. She realised that she only really loved Aragorn due her desire to be a queen. After the war she and Faramir move to Ithilien.

In the movie É is played by Miranda Otto.
