'We are truth-speakers, we men of Gondor. We boast seldom, and then perform, or die in the attempt. Not if I found it on the highway would I take it I said. Even if I were such a man as to desire this thing, and even though I knew not clearly what this thing was when I spoke, still I should take those words as a vow, and be held by them.'
During a battle with the men of the South, Faramir comes across Frodo and Sam. According to his father's law, they are doomed to execution on the spot. This does not happen, but instead Faramir risks execution himself by letting them continue their journey to destroy the One Ring. Faramir proves stonger than Boromir in that he says he would not take the ring, and keeps to that word, letting Frodo go. It is through Faramir that Frodo and Sam learn of the death of Boromir. On his return to Minas Tirith, Faramir is gravely wounded. His father Denethor is driven mad and tries to burn himself and his son, but due to the work of Pippin and Beregord, Farmir was saved from his mad father. He is taken to the House of Healing, where Aragorn cures him. He is unable to take part in the last battle, and must remain in Minas Tirith. In the House of Healing he meets Eowyn, who has also recently been healed after battling the Witch-king. He falls in love with Eowyn and eventually convinces her out of her hopeless crush on Aragorn. They marry after Aragorn becomes King of Gondor, and return to Ithilien to live. |
