Grenadier Pond, Toronto

Following the success of the British at the Plains of Abraham, slowly but surely English traditions came to bear upon Swansea (now amalgamated into the City of Toronto). According to a popular legend, during the War of 1812 a brave and determined but foolhardy band of British soldiers lost their lives trying to cross Swansea's largest body of water during a February storm. Others say that no soldiers drowned there, but rather it was the red coated soldiers from the Fort that hunted and fished by the pond that gave it its name. And yet again, legend also tells of a young brave, leading a band of British soldiers across the pond when the ice gave way and the soldiers drowned. Whatever the origin, that body of water has been popularly known since as Grenadier Pond.

Today, both boaters and ice-skaters alike have told tales of uneasy feelings as they traversed the pond. Feelings like they were being watched from underneath the waters, some even stating that they saw the faces of the long dead soldiers peering up at them.
