Old Don Jail, Toronto

Originally erected in 1863, although the section still used today was built in the late '50s, the old Don Jail’s conditions have never been considered exactly paradise. In the 1920s, one grand jury called it a "dungeon, like the Black Hole of Calcutta." In 1964, the jail was declared a tuberculosis hotbed and a "sweatbox" during summer.

An imposing building, located at 550 Gerrard Street East in Toronto, the old Don Jail was built as the original City Jail. It was expanded into a maximum-security prison where hangings took place until 1962. The building has been shut down since 1993 and is awaiting renovation. The most active ghost of the prison is in the West Wing, where women were housed. The apparition of a blonde-haired woman, who possibly hanged herself in her cell in the 1890s, has been reported floating high above the main rotunda and is apparently in a very agitated state.
