Mr. Hauser's Classroom Policies

RESPECT
RESPONSIBILITY
RESOURCEFULNESS

Mr. Hauser's Golden Rule:

Do your work, and do not interfere with the work of others.

Classroom Rules:

If you follow my Golden Rule, both in this course and in the other areas of your life, both greater success and lower stress levels are just about guaranteed. Rather than load you down with a laundry list of rules and procedures, I ask that you keep this one simple rule in mind at all time and let your actions be guided by it. And don’t forget – all of the school-wide rules in your student handbook still apply when you are in my classroom. Although I am confident that there will be no discipline problems in this class, any that may occur will be dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Seating:

Seats will be assigned for this class, but they will not remain static. The study of literature is about gaining new perspectives, so you should expect the seating arrangement to be changed periodically throughout the year.

Preparation For Class:

Every student is expected to be prepared for class every day. This means you will be expected to arrive on time, well rested and fed (research has proven that eating breakfast makes you smarter!), with homework assignments completed, and with the necessary school supplies in your possession. These supplies include your textbook, any additional handouts/novels/plays/books you have been given, a three-ring binder devoted solely to this English class with adequate loose-leaf paper in it, your homework, at least two dark blue or black pens, and any other supplies you may reasonably expect to need. Students will not be permitted to leave class to retrieve missing supplies.

Homework Policy:

Homework is intended to reinforce the lessons and improve the skills that students develop in class. As such, it is an integral element of the course. Students will not be assigned homework every single night, but you should expect to have some homework assignment most nights. And don’t forget – READING ASSIGNMENTS ARE HOMEWORK TOO!! In fact, they may often be the most important homework assignments you receive. Homework is due at the beginning of the class after it is assigned with the student’s full name, class, and date at the top of the page and all work done thoroughly, neatly, and legibly.
If you are in school for any part of the day, whether you attend this class or not, you are responsible for turning in that day’s work (in A206 between classes or in the front office) and getting that day’s assignment. You can also get homework assignments and frequent class updates at http://oocities.com/hauserefhs. Late homework will be accepted for half credit for a week after it is due, and larger assignments will lose 10 points for each day they are late.

Extra Help:

Students are strongly encouraged to seek extra help whenever they feel the need for it, preferably before they begin to feel lost or confused by the course. In some cases, students may be required to attend extra help sessions or writing conferences before or after school. Extra help is available after school most days of the week, and although I am often available without advance notice, please try to make an appointment with me in advance (at the start or end of class that day is usually sufficient). Additionally, I can be reached for help at my e-mail address: HauserEFHS@cs.com.

Signatures:

Please sign and date this sheet. In addition, please bring it home for a parent/legal guardian to read and sign. After both of you have read, discussed, and signed it, return it to me. Your signature will indicate to me that you have read, understand, and agree to follow the classroom policies. Additional copies of the policy sheet are available on my web site under the “Parents’ Page” link.
