Course Description: Searching & Writing 57

Mr. Hauser

Course Description and Purpose:
Searching & Writing is a one-semester Honors-level course designed to help students learn about information – what is it, why it is important, how to acquire it, and what you can do with it. Building on skills they already possess, students will research a number of topics, learn how to find, evaluate and organize specific types of information, and present their findings in a number of different media. Students should expect to spend time outside of class in the school and town libraries, in the community, and in front of a computer as part of their search for information and evidence. Warning: To be successful in this course, you must be willing to commit time outside of class to your individual research!

Teacher Expectations:
Because this is an Honors-level course, students are expected to be internally motivated, mature learners who are willing to do a great deal of independent work outside of class. Class participation is important in individual research, group activities and class discussions. Students are expected to work to the best of their abilities, participate in writing conferences outside of class, and complete all class assignments. This course will require that all students complete a number of research projects during the semester.

Required Materials:
Please remember to have all of these supplies with you in class every day:

Grading:
Grades will be based on a combination of the student’s effort and participation (as determined by teacher evaluation as well as homework and classwork assignments), consistent work on research projects, and the overall quality of the student’s finished work and presentations.
