Course Description: Gr. 10 English

Mr. Hauser

Course Description and Purpose:
Gr. 10 English is a full-year course focusing on the development of reading, writing and critical thinking skills. In addition to stressing the practical aspects of reading and writing, this course will require students to read closely in search of layers of meaning in a text. Literature will serve as the basis for many class activities. Students should expect to read and write frequently in a number of genres, both in class and for homework

Teacher Expectations:
Students should be internally motivated, mature learners who are willing to do a good deal of independent work outside of class. Class participation is important, both in group activities and class discussions. All students are expected to work to the best of their abilities and complete all class assignments. The final versions of some papers will need to be typed.

Outside Reading:
In addition to their regular classwork, all students will be required to read one book outside of class each marking period and complete various written assignments relating to the book they have read. Students should confer with me when selecting books, and all selections need to be approved by me. Some time for reading may be given in class, but students will need to do the majority of their reading outside of class.

Required Materials:
Please remember to have all of these supplies with you in class every day:

Grading:
Grades will be based on a combination of the student’s effort and participation (as determined by teacher evaluation as well as homework and classwork assignments), consistent work on all projects, and the overall quality of the student’s finished work.
