Keeping Forever Vigilant

The situation with President Clinton and the Republican Party’s activities against the highest office in the land should have taught us one thing - that we must, as George Washington warned, forever keep vigilance over the Congress of the United States.

While side-tracked with scandal after scandal, important issue after important issue was abandoned by Congress. Little was accomplished (and this is questionable as an ‘accomplishment’) except the never-ending search for something to use against President Clinton.

Taboo subjects were made public with every young child in the nation hearing of oral sex and the inappropriate use of cigars, inappropriate both for the young and uninitiated to what most consider sexual perversions.

And to have the impeachment of the President of the United States based on lying about having a sexual alliance with a young woman. This may be the only ‘achievement??’ of the body responsible for the governing of the United States, the nation many would believe to be the greatest country in the world.

What of pride in this country? Has the relentless pursuit of President Clinton by the Republican Party helped us hold our heads high with pride?

Has our alleged cause for world unity and peace been helped? Have the actions of congressional leaders in the last five years furthered the advancement of the people of this nation?

Or has the world been made more aware of the corruption that exists within our government, of corrupted people who should hold themselves to the highest standards of human behavior possible?

Has it helped the American public to know of the sexual activities that occur in the capital city of this nation?

Does it help to know leaders take advantage of their positions, that Washington DC is filled with willing women responding to the power of our elected body we call ‘Congress’?

And what of the awareness of the extremes women will go to become household names, to possibly, even probably, falsify testimony (Jones, Willey, Tripp, and Lewinsky) for the God-Almighty dollar? Has this helped or hurt the causes women are pursuing?

Has corruption been decreased by making the world aware that a man has lied under oath about a sexual affair? Did this cause anyone, whether American citizen or from another country, to believe those who lie will not be allowed to escape without retribution?

No, the actions of the Republican-led witch hunt against President Clinton has done none of these. Instead, their actions have done little more than convince the public, the world, that politicians will go to any length to further their own cause.

Considerations of public good and desire have little to do with their decisions. You see, their decisions are based on what is good for their party and for their own personal gain. If you don't believe this, then listen carefully to their explanations for actions taken.

Indeed, the process against President Clinton has likely not convinced anyone that corruption will not be allowed in our governing body and those associated with it. Most believe members of Congress (along with their die-hard, blind-faith supporters) will continue ignoring their own corruption while using the same acts by their opponents against those opponents.

Furthermore, sexual activities of our ‘elite’ will continue with prostitution (whether professionally or otherwise) in Washington, DC, thriving as only it can in a city of power and power mongers.

Women far down the scale of family values will continue taking advantage of their sexuality and manipulate to their own best interests, whether it be out-right prostitution or to establish a position of control through the use of their bodies and/or abilities to provide sexual pleasure.

Major contributors will continue buying the votes of politicians in order to insure that legislation is in their favor. Under-the-table, back-room, and alley deals will continue being made.

Washington DC, specifically Congress, needs cleaned up but the Starr investigation, the last five years of actions by the Republican party against President Clinton, has done nothing to further this aim. Indeed, it has hindered the process.

In fact, nothing has really changed except most of us now know for certain how despicably our leaders behave, whether politically or in their private lives.

That is the ‘legacy’ left us by our Washington leadership of late. Can it be changed by mere vigilance?

Probably not - Corruption, lying, sexual transgressions, and manipulations for power are just too deeply ingrained within the structure we call ‘Washington politics’.
