JACK KEMP REVEALS HIS TRUE COLORS

A man stands up for his convictions. A politician often goes against his convictions to win votes and noteriety. Therefore, any politician who goes against his convictions cannot possibly be a man.

E. Lewis, l996

Well, it seems as if another Washington politician has been born. Or, maybe he always was without many of us being aware of it. When he seeked the Republican nomination a few years ago, the writer never knew who Kemp was.

And, now that he does know, he wishes he didn't. Since Kemp's loss in the primaries, l988 was it, the writer doesn't recall hearing Kemp's name except when in severe opposition to Dole.

But, now, Dole and Kemp are kissing buddies, with Kemp doing most of the - well, you know where - kissing . Dole cannot do any wrong according to Kemp's acceptance speech during the Republican convention.

How can a man who so strongly believed Dole to be hurting America through his tax increases, etcetera, now stand up in front of everyone and laud Dole as nearly being saintly, the answer to America having peace and tranquility?

If a man cannot be true to himself, how can he possibly be true to others? If he publicly announces his lack of strength, and, yes, it would take a great deal of strength to turn down the recommendation as a presidential hopeful's running mate, how are any of us to believe in him in the future? How can any of us be expected to believe in the party that accepted him as the presidential running mate?

Isn't the party really admitting that it believes in running people for office that can be manipulated? Isn't the party admitting that it believes in only one idea, that of doing and saying anything in order to get their selection into office, presumedly for the power that comes with the highest office in the land?

Hasn't the party admitted its primary concern is its own power and being in the position to apply it, whether it is for the most good for most of the people or not?

And, now since Kemp is Dole's running mate, there are only ten points separating Dole from Clinton (August 16, l996). Hm, now the writer must wonder about those people polled. Why, you ask? How can the two gain in popularity after changing beliefs so drastically, Dole by now being for lowering taxes (just in the past month or so and his record of increasing taxes speaks for itself) and, Kemp, by stating what a great guy Dole is and that he holds the key to a much improved country (just in the last week).

And, let's not forget that Dole walked out on budget discussions. Kemp stated that Dole would get the budget balanced right away. Apparently, Kemp forgot - Dole refused to even sit down and try to get the budget worked out.

Come to think of it, Kemp has apparently forgotten most everything that caused his conflicts with Dole. Now, the writer is wondering how much he will forget should Dole be elected president.

Will he forget all the promises he and Dole are sure to make?

Will he forget all the stuff he said about God and Country during his speech?

Will he forget this is supposed to be a Republic, not an opportunity for those in power to take advantage of their positions?

The writer is wondering what will happen if Dole is elected and things just don't go his way. Will he walk out on different negotiations that aren't going his way and pout or what?

Time will tell but, hopefully, Ladies and Gentlemen, we do not have to wait but, instead, will see the answers people might expect reflected in the outcome of the election. That is, if Mr. Clinton remains as President.
