Prior to President Clinton’s and Monica Lewinsky’s tryst, how often did we hear about family values during newscasts and in the different printed media forms?
Prior to the Republican Party’s endeavors to destroy President Clinton, how often were family values a topic of round table discussions on popular news shows?
How often did we hear on the news the phrase ‘oral sex’, or the use of different objects for sexual purposes prior to Lewinsky’s testimony of the infamous cigar episode? As a matter of fact, how often in mixed private conversations do you now hear about either of these, whether about Clinton/Lewinsky or as part of people’s private sex lives?
Once upon a time not so very long ago, a woman would have been shunned by society for having admitted to and openly discussing any sexual acts by herself with or to a man, let alone a married man and the act being an oral one.
But, now, instead of being shunned, talk shows of all types seek out this woman as a guest on their shows as if her acts are accepted by society as this being the types of behavior to reward rather than branding a scarlet letter, so to speak, into her forehead.
Her value to society is now worth millions apparently. She (Lewinsky) keeps turning down offers and seeking to keep all rights to any interviews in order to keep on financially gaining in the future from her oral exercise on Mr. Clinton.
I have not been a moral person in the past but my immorality was always between myself and any partner but I do know this - Lewinsky does not deserve to financially gain from her immoral acts with the President.
I, for one, hoped all mention of her would end with the transcript of her testimony; that I, and the rest of the people of this nation, would hear no more the name of Lewinsky and her sexual activities, nor see her picture on my TV screen.
Apparently, however, the media feels that Lewinsky’s acts have great value for our society and are willing to pay for more for a few minutes of interview time than most families would make in two life times.
And, of course, Republican politicians make great use of ‘family values’ and using the case as the foundation for all that ails our society. Republicans, even the adulterers and those corrupted in other ways, are even trying to convince the American people that keeping the Republican Party in control of Congress will re-establish our societal value system.
The problem with this is their rhetoric is just that - its just rhetoric. In fact, they are not making any attempt at establishing morality and family values in their own ranks.
Still, Republican leaders are insisting they will get the American people on the road to developing stronger family values. I don't know but isn't that rather like the blind trying to lead the blind-folded in unknown, uncharted territory?
Do you really think, Ladies and Gentlemen, people lacking in strong enough values and character to resist temptation, can lead us anyplace other than chaos?
At any rate, I think our Congress and its leaders are as reflective of a society with its value
system and morality being out of whack as any I can think of. Their concern at this stage of
the game is nothing more than 'politiking'.
It's just too bad it happens to be our governing body that happens to be so two-faced with
two sets of values - those they profess to have and those they actually have.
