(2/22) State Tournament Championship Round
Chad Done and Daniel Covert became the 27th and 28th state champions in Highland history last night. Chad won the 112 pound championship by pinning Isaac Wright of Westwood. Daniel earned the tournaments Outstanding Wrestler Awared, avenging last years finals loss with a 5-2 decision over Colton Kiernan of Desert Vista. He also became the 8th three time state placer in Highland history.
At 135 pounds, Blake Mabry dropped a 7-3 decision in the championship match to defending state champion Reyes Cortes of Maryvale. Ty Johnson came within seconds of upsetting undefeated Derek Felton of Corona, but was pinned with 15 seconds left inthe match. As a team, the Hawks earned the third seed for next weeks dual team state tournament, finishing behind Cornona and Mesa and just ahead of Desert Vista.
(2/21) State Tournament Day Three
Trevin Waite won his afternoon match and placed 5th at 119. Entering todays competition, Highland was in 3rd place in the team standings. Trailing Corona, Mesa and ahead of Desert Vista and Brophy.
Trevin Waite advanced to the medal round this morning and will wrestle for 5th place in the afternoon session. Bryce Yncerra lost his consolation match. The other four Hawk wrestlers will be in action this evening in the championship matches.
(2/20) State Tournament Day Two
Four Highland wrestlers advanced to the championship matches tomorrow evening in Glendale. 112 - Chad Done pinned second seeded Trevor Browne wrestler. 135 - Blake Mabry advanced to the finals for the second year in a row with a 7-4 decision over Buena. 160 - Ty Johnson won a 7-2 match over Red Mountain and 171 - Daniel Covert pinned the Gilbert wrestler. Two other Hawks (119 Trevin Waite and 215 Bryce Yncerra, will be wrestling in tomorrow mornings consolation brackets needed one more win to advance to the medal round.
(2/19) State Tournament Day One
Seven Hawk wrestler remain undefeated after the 1st day of the Individual State Tournament and twelve wrestlers total are still alive. 112-Chad Done, 119-Trevin Waite, 135-Blake Mabry, 160-Ty Johnson, 171-Daniel Covert, 189-Marcello Blancett and 215-Bryce Yncerra. 125 Dallas Dimbatt won his first match before losing in the second round as did 285-Jason Cook.
Five of the seven Hawks wrestling in the consolation round advanced. 103-Mike Smith, 125-Dallas Dimbatt, 130-Van Nguyen, 140-Daniel Chaides and 285-Jason Cook. Highland is in fourth place in the team standings with 54.5 points, trailing Mesa 61.5, Corona del sol 60 and Brophy 56.5
