JULY ARCHIVE

After sweeping against the Sidewinders, the Guns go up against the Dukes for four games. For a look at what will happen during the Cannons 12 day homestand (ugh I don't like then, let alone two in a row) click here.

The Cannons are now on the road after splitting their 12 day homestand, a bit of a disappointment after winning the first 5 games. The race for first is closer than ever, offering the only three way race in the PCL. With the Guns winning their first game against the Sidewinders tonight, they are in first place by two games over both the winning Tacoma and Edmonton. The three teams continue for the next three days, the Guns in Tucson, Edmonton in Memphis, and Tacoma playing the last place Canadians in Vancouver. No radio for the Cannons on this road trip, so click on the scoreboard above for up to the minute scores.

The 'two weeks of destiny' are almost over, and the Cannons sit in first place. However, they have to win tonight against Tacoma in order to get a split with the Rainiers. After sweeping Vancouver and winning the first game against Tacoma, the Cannons have lost their last two games in a row.
Something that everybody has commented on is that this group of players is the best 'team' that has been in the Cannons clubhouse in a few years. Perhaps that is because the White Sox are, for the most part, leaving the team alone, except when injuries require a call up. This is quite a change from the Seattle years, and even the recent affiliation with the Pirates. Lets hope this team feeling stays, even as the first non-pitcher, Robert Machado, is called up, to replace the injured Charlie O'Brian.
The Cannons are winning even though their team statistics seem to point to a less than stellar club, just the opposite of the last couple of years. They are 11th in team hitting, with a .272 average, although Mario Valdez is 6th in hitting with a .331 average. The only Cannon at the top of the leader board in any stats column is Lou Frazier, who leads the league in stolen bases with 24. The pitching staff is ranked 14th in ERA, with a 4.95 ERA. The team, with it's 'bullpen by committee', is getting good pitching at the right times the last few weeks.
After tonight's game, it's the turn of the Memphis Redbirds to come to Burns Stadium. This marks the return of Reed Secrest to Burns Stadium. Reed, a longtime fan favorite here, is having a tough year after going to Japan for most of last year. He's hitting just .216 this season. For all you out of town fans, the games are on the Internet! With the all star break over, the Cannons face two weeks that can make or break their season. Starting Thursday, they play (or have played) twelve straight games against their division rivals from Tacoma, Vancouver and Edmonton. The Guns have split the first two against the Trappers, and return home after tomorrow to face first Vancouver, then the first place Tigers. The Guns need to be sharp in order to keep pace in what is becoming the PCL's most interesting race. Click here to listen to Saturday's and Sunday's Cannons/Trappers games.

The rains and storms which forced the Cannons to cancel their last two games against Salt Lake, and which have caused such havoc with this year's Stampede, have caused the Cannons crack grounds crew to take a unique measure. Faced with sub par drainage in centre field, they have widened the warning track, as well as other improvements designed to increase drainage in case of rain. The field is a lush green, and barring storms, is more than ready for Monday's game.
