Cockatiels Information
The Cockatiel has a relatively long life span of about 15 to 20 years or more in captivity.
Cockatiels grow down feathers that disintegrate into a fine dust.
There
are several color varieties of Cockatiel. Normal, Silver, Pastel, Cinnamon,
Fallow, White Face, Pearl, Albino to name a few.
It
is truly a matter of personal preference, which you find appealing.
Cockatiels thrive and breed well on a simply prepared commercial diet
of seeds or pellets.
They need a regular supply of various fresh green foods such as, spinach,
Brussels sprouts, watercress, and carrots. All green food should be given
fresh daily.
Your
bird should have a cuttle bone available at all times for his/her calcium
needs.
Better is a mineral supplement such as Avimin, added to their water
daily.
And of
course your bird should always have fresh water available at all times.
They
like apples (NO APPLE SEEDS, they are poisonous), grapes, oranges
and just about any fruit and nearly all vegetables. These can be given
raw or cooked.
Also a good treat is an occasional peanut. Please limit these, since
they are very high in protein. Another treat is raw or cooked pasta,
they do like that.
DO NOT
ever give your bird COFFEE, CHOCOLATE; the caffeine is very bad for
them, and no AVOCADOS. Other than that, your bird can eat pretty well
whatever you eat, but should have a low salt intake.
