Rimouski, Quebec The sky above Rimouski region was the setting of UFO activity reported in the July 23, 1971 issue of Le Devoir. The newspaper account was published in translation by Yurko Bondarchuk in UFO: Sightings, Landings and Abductions (1979). Several round unidentified objects, continuously pulsating, were observed in the sky from various locations in the Rimouski area, causing some consternation with the local population. The Phenomenon, sighted Tuesday night, July 20, 1971, at Rimouski, St. Odile, Sacre' Coeur and Bic, was described by many witnesses as rotating, fire red in color with green and blue rays flashing around. The most acceptable hypothesis is that the objects could have been artificial satellites of earthly origin, seen under special conditions, but this has been rejected by the Chairman of the Physics department at the Center d'Etudes Universitaries de Rimouski. Michel Campagnat stated that such satellites cross the sky in an arc in ten minutes and cannot in any way be geostationary, as in the case of the sighted objects. Three days later, at 8:26 PM, July 23, 1971, much of Quebec was struck by a massive power blackout. Bondarchuk noted the seeming coincidence. |
