SERIES1 (1994)
Episode 1
Summary: Christina Milano is the new english and history teacher at
Hartley High and all the kids give her a hard time because she's new.
There's a new student, Jack, who is Vietnamese and because of that
Rivers and his crew show their racist side. Rivers sets Jack's bag on
fire and because of it they decide to meet afterschool for a fight.
They do meet and everyone else gets involved. Christina overheard about
it but believed Rivers and Jack when they said they weren't going to
fight. She goes and trys to stop the fight after it has started but she
gets punched herself. This incident ends the fight. The next day at
school nobody thinks that she is going to come back, but she surprises
them and does. She gives them a speech about how no one should hate
another person, no matter who they are. I guess because of this, Jack
and Rivers seem to patch it up.
Nick is lusting after the new girl, Jodi, but she doesn't seem
to be interested. But by the end it looks as though she does kinda like
him.
Danielle and Steve are dating.
Episode 2
Summary: Jodi is caught rapping in class and Southgate and Deloraine are angered because
some of her lyrics were pretty touchy and the other kids were chanting stuff like "burn
down the school". Despite warnings not to, Jodi continues to rap and is sent to
Deloraine. Yola , Graham and Christina don't see anything wrong with it because it is
just a way for the kids to express themselves and let off steam.
After Rose prints the lyrics to Jodi's song in the school paper, Deloraine bans
the paper. After Nick convinces Rose to print another issue of the now banned paper,
the kids are warned and threatened with suspension. They decide to arrange a sit-in
type deal to fight for their freedom of speech. They go through with it and Yola and
Christina persuade Deloraine and Southgate to listen to what the kids have to say (this
was achieved after Christina found some pictures of Deloraine in his youth fighting for
his beliefs in the 60s). The kids and administration compromise with eachother and
everyone ends up happy (except Con who wanted a soccer team but was not granted one).
Dani and Steve's relationship is rocky and Steve asks Con for help to win Dani
back. He ends up dressing up and giving Dani roses on Valentine's day. She then takes
him back.
Episode 3
Summary: Southgate thinks that it is too dangerous for the kids to play soccer in the
school yard at lunch and has Deloraine ban the kids from playing. The kids are obviously
upset and ask if they can have a real soccer team. Although hard to convince, Deloraine
allows a soccer team. But who will coach? Christina volunteers despite sexist comments
from Southgate. Christina's parents don't think she should coach considering soccer is a
"man's" sport, but she doesn't listen to them. The kids are a little miffed that it is
Christina that is coaching but they get over it fast. Everyone is then upset over the
fact that Dani wants to try out for goalie. Despite the feelings from the guys and
Southgate, Christina lets Dani try out and eventually keeps her on the team.
Steve is upset that Dani wants to play soccer because he doesn't want her to get
hurt. She's upset with his chauvanist tendencies and their relationship seems on the
brink of breaking up. But, Steve sees the error of his ways, apologises to Dani, and
then they make up.
Jodi needs an amplifier for her guitarist and so Nick promises he will get her
one. He makes a deal with Con that if Con gets Nick an amp, he will score lots of
goals. Con gets an amp from some cousin (or uncle?). Jodi makes a recording at the
school. Her and Nick are getting closer and a rumour starts that her and Nick are
sleeping together. This is due mostly to Con's big mouth. Nick has Con apologise to Jodi
and everything works out in the end.
Episode 4
Summary: Chaka gets a ride home from Ruby's one night with Rivers and his friend. What
they don't know is that the car they are in is stolen. Rivers gets hauled out of class
the next day by the police. Southgate gets him out of trouble though and has him do odd
jobs for him in return. Christina is not happy that Rivers was able to skip her class
with Southgate's permission. Chaka is worried that Rivers will tell the cops that she
was in the car also, but he doesn't. Rivers sort of asks Chaka out and she says that
maybe one day they could go somewhere together.
After going to the beach, Nick stays at Jodi's apartment and they sleep
together. Nick's parents are upset when he doesn't come home but they end up forgiving
him on the condition that they get to meet Jodi. She's scheduled to come over for
supper that night, except that she comes over an hour late! Nick's parents aren't upset
and everyone seems to like each other.
Christina tells her parents and Marco that she's moving in with Yola.
Episode 5
Summary: Jodi takes her demo to an A&R man and he likes it enough that he says he'll call
her later in the week. Also, he gives Jodi tickets to a big concert the next night. Nick
goes over to Jodi's to celebrate, but he comes home late and his dad is really mad
because earlier he told Nick he had to be home by 6 o'clock every night because his
grades are slipping. Nick tells his dad that he's going to a concert tomorrow night and
then the two of them get into a big argument over grades, curfews, etc. Nick packs a bag
and leaves home; he heads for Jodi's. At school everyone gets mad at Jodi for getting
Nick in trouble and for being the reason why Nick wants to quit school.
The A&R man calls Jodi back and says that she's good but they're not sure
enough to give her her own record deal. He says that the company wants to send her to
Melbourne to play with a rock band. She's unsure at first, but after Irini comes over
and talks to her and then convinces her to take the chance, she accepts the offer. Nick
is upset at first that she doesn't want him to come with her, but they make up. Nick
moves back home and everything's ok with his folks now.
Christina is annoyed that Marco keeps coming over to the flat un-announced, but
after a call and some roses, they patch it up also.
Episode 6
Summary: Chaka is acting really strange, coming late to class, and completey bombs a huge
history test that Christina gives. Everybody is really worried so they go and check on
her when she doesn't show up at Ruby's. Chaka explains that her mom has gone away for
awhile and that she's in charge so that means she has to do all the work. She has to
finish her mother's job of ironing clothes to make money for the rent, except that she's
behind and not doing a very good job. Everybody decides to pitch in with Peter and Con
becoming the ring leaders. When he's not reading postcards from Jodi or writing ones to
her, Nick tries to keep Chaka's brother, Diego, out of trouble by helping him with his
soccer skills. Peter gets it out of Chaka that her mother has gone back to El Salvador
to look for her father. Her father went missing a few years back but someone said they
saw him so her mother went back home 3 weeks ago.
To keep them away from welfare and the cops, Yola and Christina let Chaka,
Diego, and their little sister, Juanita, stay at their house. At the end, Chaka
receives a phone call... it's her dad.
Marco is pestering Christina to pick a wedding day, so she does: it will be in 4
months.
Episode 7
Summary: After a nasty article was written about the kids at Hartley, they decide to
prove themselves by accepting an invitation to debate a rival school. Chaka and Rose
volunteer to be on the team and so does Con (but only so that Chaka will like him more).
The debate seems pretty even except that Chaka is extrememly nervous and ruins her
turn. But miracuously Con makes a brilliant speech and after that it looks like the
victory could go either way. Even though they lose the debate, it is a moral victory
for all.
The soccer team is unhappy with Christina as coach and Nick is the only one on
her side. Nick asks his dad if he would help coach considering he used to be a soccer
star in Greece. George says no, and the team gets pretty mad at Nick. Nick's mom,
Irini, decides to help Christina and becomes their manager. After a lot of convincing,
Irini gets George to agree to coach. Everybody ends up happy.
George and Nick get a call from the police and learn that Irini has been in an
accident.
Episode 8
Summary: Irini dies and George isn't coping very well. This means that
Nick and Effie are pretty much on their own. Effie is fine and at first
Nick looks do be doing well, but then he starts to lash out at everyone.
Christina goes over to the Poulos' to talk to George and to tell him
that the kids really need him. Con's mom, Helen, also tells George that
he can't think of himself as the only one who's lost Irini.
While this is happening, Steve tells Nick that he's heard a
rumor (which is actually false) that the other car in the accident was
speeding. Nick goes down to the police station and gets so angry with
them for not doing their job that he hits one of the officers.
George shapes up and the family seems to be doing much better.
Episode 9
Summary: George isn't holding up very well and Effie has to do most of the cooking. Nick
is upset that Effie says that she is still talking to Irini. Christina suggests that
they should get a housekeeper. Unexpectedly, Helen sends over a housekeeper named Stella
to meet George, Nick, and Effie. They all like her and agree for her to stay on and
help. George also decides to return to coaching the soccer team.
Steve missed an exam with Graham and so Graham schedules the makeup for an
afternoon when Steve has rugby practise. He goes and complains to Southgate. Southgate
can't agree on a solution so they go and see Deloraine. Deloraine wants them to
compromise but Graham won't give in and Steve must sit the exam. Steve grudgingly
writes the exam, but after he's proud of himself and so is Dani. Because he no longer
can play rugby, he joins the soccer team and everyone welcomes him.
The soccer team needs new jerseys badly after they see their rich opponent
practising and also see their nice shiny jerseys. At Ruby's Con sees a guy that can get
jerseys for the team. He wants to get them for free so he makes a bet for them over a
game of pool. Somehow though, Ruby ends up playing the game and winning! They now have
shiny red jersys and win their match with a great shot made by Steve.
Episode 10
Summary: Jodi finally comes back from Melbourne. At first she tells Nick that she was
with no one else after he asks. But Chaka, Dani, and Rose see her hugging another guy
and he then gives her a kiss in front of Nick while in Ruby's. He's more than a little
mad and when he asks Jodi if she slept with anyone else, she confesses that she did.
Nick overreacts and slaps Jodi. Christina explains to Nick that she could report him
and urges him to apologise to Jodi. He does, and they make up.
Marco gets his promotion except that it means that he will be moving to Perth.
He has it all arranged for him and Christina to move right away. Christina seems to
accept at first, but she doesn't want to leave Hartley especially after all the work
she's done with the kids. Marco doesn't seem to respect her career or choices, and this
makes it clear to Christina that she doesn't want to go. She tells Marco this and also
tells him that the wedding is off. He does not take it too well.
Every girl is ga-ga over the new drama and english teacher, Mr. North, including
Yola. She is continually asking him to go out with her, but his eye seems to be on
Christina.
Episode 11
Summary:Deloraine arrives at school, walking through a mountain of litter
in the school yard. Rivers and Steve have a bit of a punch up, and
Deloraine gives them the project of cleaning up the yard.
George and Stella argue over the sanctity of marriage; she tells him
she left her husband. As George finds it unforgiveable that a woman
could leave her husband, he refused to listen to her, to hear her
reasons, and just urges Stella to find another job.
Rose gets flirty with her teacher, Mr North, giving him a short story to
read. She tries to give him a shoulder rub down too but he declines.
Nick and Effie are disappointed that Stella is gone, and refuse to eat
George's breakfast.
The kids in North's class are doing animals. Rivers, appropriately
enough, is
an ape. Con is a dog who 'pees' on Bolton. Rose is a very friendly cat,
who
rubs herself against North's leg, to his embarrassment. He brings it up
later to Christine and Yola, who don't take Rose's efforts seriously.
The theme in North's class is Witchcraft, and they are to act out The
Crucible by Arthur Miller. Parts are handed out and Rose asks to play
Abigail (who falls in love with an older man, Proctor). She suggests
North should play John Proctor. "If you were there, I wouldn't even have
to act" she tells him. The next scene, Rose watches North surfing, then talks to him on the beach.
She gets him to admit she's attractive. North later tells Christine,
Yola, and Graham at dinner that night, and they notify him that he's
gotten himself in a bit of a mess. So the next day, after class, North
and Rose meet at the beach. He tells Rose about how he once taught at a
small school (in the
outback I think) and got involved with a student. It ruined his marriage
and nearly cost him his job. So, no more of that, thank you very much.
She appreciates his honesty and plants a fat kiss on his cheek with a
cheerful "see ya".
Stella shows up at the Poulos door, to give something to Effie. George
invites her in, after apologizing for not listening to her. He
eventually asks her to return, and she agrees.
Rivers and Steve have devised a clever way to clean up the school yard:
they put pictures of Deloraine up above a couple of basketball hoops and
the school kids basically clean up the yard by throwing the rubbish
through the hoops.
Last scene: Stella is playing in the street with Steve and Effie,
watched over by a smiling George Poulos.

now of course the music program will stay.
Rose makes lots of inuendos to Christina that Phil North likes younger women and
that Christina is not his type. Christina asks Phil if there was/is anything between
Rose and Phil and he says no, that all he did was make a comment to Rose that she was
pretty, so she must have just blown it out of proportion. Rose keeps making comments
and spying on Christina and Phil. Finally Phil admits that at his old school he had an
affair with a 17 year old girl/student. Christina is extremely angry and hurt and
breaks it off with him. He asks Deloraine for a transfer and then he is gone. Christina

incident and totally blows it out of prorportion by saying that Graham tried to molest

Rivers and Bolton make unnecessary rude comments to Graham and trash his car. Lots of
kids are dropping Graham's classes because they're parents are afraid. The father files
a complaint, but the schoolboard finds Graham innocent. Chaka's father comes to talk to
the class about his experiences because they can be applied to Graham's situation.
Graham shows up at Yola and Christina's flat all beat up and says that he wants to quit.

her father have helped him see the error of his ways. The kids are all in support of
Graham and are happy when they hear that he's going to stay at Hartley.

totally out of control. Jack comes and sees what's happened and gets in a fight with
Rivers... which means Deloraine's office on Monday morning. Jack and Rose make up.

Steve. Southgate tells Yola that things aren't going well with his wife and daughter.
