The province of British Columbia in 1989 established a program to train fire department personnel, to provide medical attention when they responded to accidents or medical emergencies. As the fire department would be the initial care givers, the program was named "First Responder" The goal of this program is to provide medical care and assessment of life threatening injuries in the first critical moments upon arrival at the scene and until the BC Ambulance Service arrives. Honeymoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department has been a "First Responder" department since 1991 with members having obtained their Level 3 Licenses. Since 1993, the department has also had members licensed to do Spinal Management. Our goal is to have all of our members trained as first responders. To assist with that, in 1998, two of our members became licensed instructors. In order to keep these learned skills sharp, they are part of the regular weekly practice so that no matter the emergency, fire, medical or rescue, the members of the Honeymoon Bay Volunteer Fire Department will be ready to answer the call.
