When we hear that we are to keep ourselves unstained from the world", we are being asked to practice "custody of the heart". Spiritual writers used to talk about something called "custody of the eyes". It meant that we had to be careful about what we looked at. "Custody of the heart" would have a similar meaning. This means that we have to be careful
about how we cultivate the kind of heart we wish to have.
To practice "custody of the heart" we need to be watchful. Watchfulness means that we set a guard to the door of our hearts. We don't let everything in. In fact, we are quite strong about keeping certain things
out of our hearts. And we do this because we know that it is dangerous to play with evil. When we allow things such as pornography and violence to enter our hearts, we have already moved over the line. We
