Here is an opinion submitted by someone anonymously who is apparently in a hardcore band:
Being in a Band fucking sucks. For all you people starting bands up. Unless your ready to give out blowjobs. Quit!!!! Record labels fuck you, club promoters fuck you. Everyone fucks you accept the women at shows. There is no Hardcore Unity and there never will be. Hardcore is the worst business to ever get it. If you gonna play hardcore you better have a nice spot on a bench picked out to sleep. You'll never make any money and the headach will never go away. Blood, Sweat and Tears gets you bent over and rammed in the ass.
Here is a response to that last opinon:
You know, it sounds like you had a bad day. I sometimes feel the way you do about the music business. I've been playing for ten years and it doesn't get any easier. But I have learned what to do and what not to do when things get me down.
First of all, complaining gets you nowhere. If you piss and moan about
how much hardcore sucks and how you're not getting anything out of it and how much you're giving ad infinitum, it's going to come off as mindless kvetching and what will you accomplish with that? Are all the shady club owners and shady record label owners going to change their ways because of your complaint? Will the women at shows swarm you because you're complaining that
they don't? Of course not. So while you may feel justified in
complaining, just realize it gets you nowhere.
Secondly, don't blame the entire scene because you're frustrated. It might just be your local area that has fucked-up shit happening, and there is no reason to shit all over hardcore because the scene in your city or state sucks. There's alot of people continually working and giving to hardcore so that your band will have a place to play, a place to stay when you tour, a
zine to interview your band, review, and advertise your music, or a label to release your music on, and even a forum to voice your opinion. If someone fucks you over don't do business with that individual, but don't think that everyone is out to screw you because that isn't the case.
Third, about unity- of course, not everyone is going to agree on
everything, but if we can put aside the trivial things and just have mutual respect for each other, learn to have a sense of humor and laugh at ourselves more often instead of taking things way too seriously, and all in all try to be a good example in a time and place where there are none, then maybe we can at least
coexist. I am not naive enough to think that there's going to be one unified scene, but I do know that it isn't very hard to get along with people unless you're a complete asshole. All it takes is a little effort and a willingness to communicate.
Fourth, if you want money, fortune, fame, and the life of a rockstar, then you're in the wrong scene. Perhaps playing music like Creed or Limp Bizkit (on this site they are referred to Limp Wristed) is more suited to cashing in on the quick buck. Quite simply, hardcore will never be mainstream music because the minute a hardcore band gets mainstream exposure the HxC kids reject them. If you're going to sell out, sell out and forget trying to have hardcore credibility, otherwise, it's a fine line
to walk if you even want to break even as a band, let alone make money. I know. I've slept on benches before. It's not rewarding until you get onstage and release all that energy.
Bottom line? If it's so painful for you, and you don't leave, you're either a glutton for punishment or you love being in a hardcore band, or both. I think you have to be both. Otherwise we all wouldn't be doing this.
