DISGORGE(US) INTERVIEW:
Interview make in new zealand
with Ed Talorda by our corresponsal God Grinder
1. Hi Ed! You guys just got home after a Oceania/Asia tour, how's the tour
and the bands you played with on the tour? Anything interesting during the
tour?
E: All the bands we played with were killer!!! Definitely giving the
states’ local acts a run for their money!!!! And Dawn of Azazel crushed it
with us this tour!!! Highlights that stuck with me from shows were: Hobart,
Tasmania- Wild and very participant audience, Christchurch, NZ- Wild drunken
rugby players tackling each other in the pit, All three Asia shows- 500+
crazy people causing havoc in the venues…….. All the people we met and
partied with was the greatest! They made us feel at home!!!!
2. You released your latest album "Parallels of Infinite Torture" last year.
The album is great IMO, but I heard many people said it's boring cuz there
is nothing new in this album. What do you think of this?
E: Most of those people aren’t really listening to it…. IMO, PoIT is an
expansion to its predecessor, Consume the Forsaken, with more audible guitar
work and faster, more aggressive blasts, not to mention Levi’s gutturals
being smack dab in the middle of Matti and AJ….
3. You guys signed with Crash Music after a long term cooperation with
Unique Leader Records, what's the difference between the two labels? I think
Crash Music is the biggest distributor of Unique Leader Records?
E: Not much different……. Crash just distros our CD and gets some
advertisement out for some sales…. Nothing more, really….. I think that’s
one reason why the band left UL….
4. Disgorge is a great live band, did you guys plan to release a DVD?
E: Eventually we will…… Hopefully after the next album or sooner when
Disgorge owns full rights to publish some more of the material….
5. Are you preparing the
materials for next album?
E: Yes… As of right now Diego has 2/3rds of one song memorized that we
had riffs to! Haha!
We have a couple more tours lined up supporting PoIT so hopefully we can get
some new stuff under our belt…..
6. There are many bands influenced by Disgorge around the world, and many of
them are imitating your style, what do you think of this?
E: Let them….. We’re still the same band in the same rehearsal room
writing the same brutal shit…. No one has the riffing feel of Diego Sanchez
and Ben Marlin, and hopefully my input puts another twist in the formula
when the time comes!!!
7. You are the newest member in Disgorge, so how did they get you into the
band?
E: I ran sound for them on tour w/ Incantation in 2003…… 10 years of
being in my band, Mortuus Terror(SD, CA) I was exhausted of doing the same
shows every other week at home, so I actually came to them, at the same
time: they were waiting for the day I’d step up to the position. We got
along very well on that tour, I was local in SD, and I learned the songs
practically like I wrote them myself, with the intent to make a good thing
better….. And I’m pretty sure they had the exact same thing in mind on their
end, otherwise I would not have made it on tour w/ Suffocation, record the
album, and gone on the tours following the album’s release!!! So I’d say
we’re pretty set on the lineup we have now…
8. What instruments/devices do you use? Do you think using expensive
instrument/devices will help you a lot with playing music? I often heard
people complaining they dont have good instrument/devices so they cant play
the music well...
E: Really, aside from fat chunky distortion, first and foremost is your
technique. I use a Line 6 POD Pro into a Mesa 2:100 here in the states…… But
if we’re being supplied JCM 900’s as backline, I’m not afraid to plug
straight into it and make that sound good….. I practice the riffs on clean
channel when I’m not at full blown band rehearsal to make sure every note is
played to audibility as possible. I try not to use distortion pedals unless
I have to, but my ex boss Thom Beebe at Guitar Trader and accomplished 80’s
metal guitarist for a hair band called Assassin, showed me how to get tone
out of a straight head and usually I don’t have any problems….. Hell I even
played on a JCM 800 in Tokyo and it sounded pretty good, because the
performance outmatched the gear!!! I HATE JCM 800’s straight!!! If I could
do it again I’d at least have a Metal Zone handy!!

9. When did you begin to listen to Metal? What's the first Metal record you
bought?
E:I grew up listening to 80’s Heavy Metal(Ozzy, Maiden, Dio, Kiss) I was
like 7 years old. Picked up a guitar at 10…… The first metal record I bought
was Piece of Mind…
10. What's your personal top 10 albums? What music do you like other than
Death Metal? Do you listen to non-metal music?
E: Slayer - Reign in Blood/Hell Awaits, Dark Angel - Darkness Descends,
Testament - The New Order, Death - Human, Gorguts - Erosion of Sanity,
Morbid Angel - Blessed are the Sick, Deicide - Legion, Cannibal Corpse -
Tomb of the Mutilated, Nile - Black Seeds of Vengeance….. I listen to a lot
of non DM stuff… like Confessor, Dream Theatre, Psychotic Waltz…. Some world
music: Al DiMeola, Les Paul…. I even have some pop music in my jukebox!!
11. It's the beginning of 2006 now, can you name a few 2006 releases you
like? And what's you favourite albums of 2005? Are there any new bands you
want to recommend to us?
E: Nile - Annihilation of the Wicked, Origin - Echoes of Decimation,
Aeon - Bleeding the False, Psycroptic - Symbols of Failure, Defeated
Sanity’s upcoming release…… There are a couple of new bands I’d recommend:
Letum Ascensus from LA, Epicedium from Lancaster, CA, Condemned from San
Diego, CA as well their side project(dunno what it’s called) There are so
many out now…… and the world is playing brutal death metal!!!!
12. Did you ever listened to any Chinese bands?
E: No, but I’d like to hear some new stuff from the 4th dimension of the
world, as I call it!!!
13. Finally, what do you want to say to Disgorge fans?
E: Support your local metal scene!!!! Thanks for your support and see
you soon!!
