MOVIE REVIEW

Office Space

Work Sucks.

After watching this movie, Nancy and I were inspired to name our band, Milton, a character who does not look like he is the smartest person, but makes us take a second look at our beliefs at the end. Cruel actions taken towards him make you feel sorry for him, a poor man trying to earn a living, only wanting one piece of cake, but in the end you can do nothing but laugh at the results.
The 1999 film, Office Space starring Ron Livingston, Jennifer Anniston, Gary Cole, and our hero Stephen Root, is possibly one of the funniest movies a person can see in their lifetime. It captures the essence of life after college consisting of a monotonous job in the IT industry with stereotypical office colleagues, a bumbling boss and a horrible social life, the life of Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston). The bizarre chain of events in the beginning from a traffic jam that imitates at the average drivers' "spaz" attacks to the hypnotist, who dies while hypnotizing Peter into relaxing, provides the audience with nonstop laughter. As life slowly moves along for Peter, we see the rest of the characters develop, especially Milton (Stephen Root), and Bill Lumberg (Gary Cole), not to be mistaken with the Gary Coleman from the 1970's sitcom Diff'rent Strokes. We constantly see Milton's over-possessiveness of a red stapler, and feel like attacking Bill every time you hear, "Um…yea…" or "…That'd be great…". Not only are we graced by the acting of those two, we have Peter's colleagues Samir Nayeenanajar and Michael Bolton, no not the singer in fact he cannot stand the singer, who team up with Peter in a plan to steal money from the company.
Of course the movie would not be complete without a love story, and that’s where Jennifer Anniston fits in. She plays a waitress, who does not seem to have enough "flair," according to her boss, and at the same time, falls in love with none other than our Peter Gibbons. An uncanny mix-up between the boss Bill Lumberg and another man sharing the same last name,Lumberg, and accusations of relationships, result in a rift in the relationship and a strange, but funny dream scene that gives Peter the chills.
It wouldn't be fair to tell you what happens in the end, if the love blossoms, if the plan to steal money succeeds, and what exactly does happen to Milton and Bill Lumberg. But if there were one movie you should see before you die, it would be Office Space.
