Callow

Who said Maryland was lacking in music among other things? Callow is one of those bands from Maryland that proves those people wrong. I first saw them open for one of my favorite bands, Rooney, in February and I almost got there barely a live because it was snowing. I was shocked; I am used to seeing bands with five members and the occasional trios and quartets, but rarely a band with eight members. It was awkward seeing them all squished on a rather small stage, but once they started to play, everything was right in the world, and bands with eight members was the perfect amount.
Their music is so dreamy, and relaxing, making it divergent from the pop-punk stylings of Good Charlotte and Wakefield. “Lessons in Shuteye” is a great song because of a) the title of the song and b) it has some awesome chord progressions, and c) superb lyrics that are perfect for the song. “Oxygen” progresses into a greater song every time I get the chance to listen to it. The song starts off softly and sweetly, but then builds up to a beautiful chorus.
So the question is, can you really call these guys and a gal callow? Maybe they were callow when they began playing together around 1999. The real answer is: not really, you can’t call them a callow band; their songwriting is too impressive and mature.
