Full Minute of Mercury: Not Just a 1/2 Girl Band

A full minute of mercury could kill you. Full Minute of Mercury the band is not lethal at all, unless you count having some well-crafted songs stuck in your head. Keys, rocking guitars and basses, energetic drums, and a distinct voice define Full Minute of Mercury as one of the most unique bands in DC. The band is comprised of three gals, Theresa (vocalist), Michele (bassist and vocalist), and Cindy (keyboardist), and 3 guys, Tom (guitarist), Dan (drummer), and Chris (guitarist). Although there are just as many guys as there are girls in the band, there does not seem to be a hint of testosterone in the lyrics. GIRL POWER!
Full Minute has spunky lyrics about misbehaving boys and their mysterious ways. Theresa sweetly sings, “When you treat me like a princess/buy me roses/I want to punch you in the face” in the song “Next to Me.” It’s a counter-movement to the growing “genre” of “emo” in which males moan about “evil” girls and their habits of breaking hearts on purpose for fun (“emo” is really misunderstood, but I don’t feel like going on a really long explanation about the specific bands and their correct genres so I’ll just call them what other people call them, “emo”). Their tough and vivacious lyrics break any stereotypes of girls being delicate, helpless, and reserved.
For those who aren’t into the strong-willed feminine lyrics, their music is a delightful blend of genres. New wave, pop, punk, and rock influences are in their songs; when combined they create bouncy and striking songs that concede any kind of lyrics. Keyboards always give a band an extra something, because many bands overlook the distinctive quality of the keyboard. They also make the band sound more innovative and unique than many other indie bands.
They’ve got cred too! Within five months of their formation, they have played fifty shows within six states, and they continue to tour vigorously up and down the east coast. In between touring, they finished recording their first demo including the songs “Next to Me,” “Dream in Drop D,” and “Cold Day last December.” Their singles get frequent airplay on the weekly program on DC 101’s Local Lix, and the Washington Post’s personal MP3 site shows that their songs are quite popular downloads. Through a national vote, Full Minute were chosen to open for the Suicide Girls live burlesque bar tour stop at the Black Cat sponsored by Buddyhead, Pitchfork Media, and Makeoutclub in February 2004.
It’s not all about girl power. This is about a band that’s talented and should get exposure. We’re providing the exposure, and now would you please provide the action? Check out their website: http://www.fullminute.com and listen to some of their music or go to one of their shows or do both…
