Down With Fupa: Ska's Comeback
What do you get when you put seven highschool boys together who have raging hormones and incredible musical talent? My guess would be a lot of competition, a lot of fighting, and sick nasty jokes that somehow only guys find funny...but the members of Down With Fupa managed to prove me wrong (well everything except for the sick, nasty jokes, but boys will be boys) and follow in the footsteps of the many before them and create a ska band! SKA?!? Yes, Nancy and I, too, thought that ska was dead, but there again, I was wrong, apparently ska is making its comeback.
I guess the only way to start is to begin at the beginning, how I came to know of them. I was invited to a party, yes I know...groundbreaking for my social calendar, and on the invitation there was a tid bit about a band that was going to come and play...and if you guessed Down With Fupa you can now say with confidence that you were legitimately passed through kindergarten. So my headcase reporter, looking for new local bands side came out and before they played I went up them...and blah, blah, Im rambling.
The seven piece band is comprised of a trumpet player, Anuj Kapur, a trombone player, Braden Silverman, Bassist and co-vocalist, Dan Blaemire, Drummer, Max Harwood, two tenor saxaphone players, Nate Freeman and Steve Adams, and finally the guitarist and other co-vocalist Wilson Harwood. A mouthful huh? Well, the eclectic of instruments made the performance even more enjoyable, and I think its safe to say that their musical talent is definately better than their fillers between songs, otherwise known as, stage presence. If you may take a grain of salt with this otherwise sugary review, also known as take some criticism from the critic, work on stage presence. For those who have yet to see them, I guess I would describe it as the songs building up to a climactic high point of energy with the band members contributing to the movement of the audience, however, just at the peak when the song stops, everyone freezes waiting for some comment or maybe nothing but to keep playing, but then is given a lame joke about puberty. Other than that, the band had the crowd bopping around, shakin' their booties, and sweating from all the movement with their catchy single, "Claire" and other hits like a cover on "Ghostbusters."
It is inevitable that when you listen to their songs that you will be dancing, if you aren't the shakin' yo bootay type, then atleast a chair dance, or a finger tap on the steering wheel. The best advice I can give is to keep on rocking, and spreading the good music!
I would have written more about these young men, however times did not match up for an interview, or some kind of questioning. But if you want more information on them you can visit their website Down With Fupa .
