*Treating Head Lice Safely*
(   Not long ago if I had to recommend  a lice treatment, I'd have recommended any of the many over the counter type headlice treatment shampoos.  Now that I have had the experience of finding that most lice has become resistant to them,  I won't recommend anyone use them in that I find them to be a waste of time & money.  Ruling those out, I would have recommended calling the family pediatrician & asking for a prescriptive strength lice treatment shampoo.  I won't recommend those now either in that I have recently learned that they are not safe, & carry high risks such as leukemia, brain damage & even death, for many unsuspecting users.  I now can only recommend treating headlice with olive oil.  Olive oil when used correctly together with the complete removal of nits & the proper methods of ridding the home of lice & nits as well, is quite effective as a headlice cure. The best part ,not only is olive oil the safest method I've ever heard of, Olive oil is affordable, and very gentle on the skin, hair, and eyes.   )
Instructions For Using Olive Oil to Treat Headlice Safely
1)  Instruct the person being treated to wear an old cotton shirt.  Olive oil may cause staining if it gets on your clothes.
Supplies You Will Need ::  olive oil,  a shower cap,  towels,  a wide tooth comb, an old cotton shirt, paper towels, a plastic bag, clarifying shampoo, hair gel, a fine tooth comb
2)  Drape a towel over the person's shoulders to catch any olive oil drips.  Be prepared. Olive oil is very messy to work with.  It is very likely that it will drip down the back & the neck of the person who is being treated.
3)  Starting in the front of the head, apply the olive oil heavily, all along the hairline from ear to ear.  Next, apply the oil heavily to the back side of the head, in the nape, all along the hair line from ear to ear.  This method of applying to all the edges of the hair is very important in that the lice will not like the olive oil & may try to escape, crawling away very quickly.  This method insures that they stay put, in that they are now surrounded by a border of olive oil.  Apply the oil heavily to the entire remaining areas of the scalp. Next, apply the olive oil to the any remaining hair that is not already covered with the oil.  The most important goal in order for this method of treatment to be successfull in killing all of the lice is to be very sure not to miss any of the hair or scalp.  The hair & scalp must be fully saturated with the oil.  Next, in order to be certain that no spots on the scalp or strands of hair have been missed, using a wide tooth comb, comb the oil through out the hair from roots to ends.
4)  Place a plastic shower cap over the top of the person's head so as to cover all of thier hair & scalp.
5)  Leave the oil in for at least the next following 10 hours.  Most people find that it is convenient to apply the oil prior to going to bed, & leaving it in the hair overnight while they sleep.  Timing is crucial.  Do not try to cut the timing short, or the olive oil treatment may not have the amount of time needed to kill the lice.
6) Once 10 hours has passed with the oil in the hair, use a good clarifying type shampoo to wash the oil from the hair & scalp.  Two or three shampoos may be needed to completely remove all traces of the oil.
7)  Dry the hair thoroughly.
8)  Remove all of the nits from the hair. Failure to remove each & every single nit, will result in a reinfestaion of live lice. Pinching  & grasping the nits between the nails of your index finger & thumb, slide the nit down the length of hair to the ends to remove it. As an added measure of caution, I usually crush the nits.  Be careful in discarding those nits.  Olive oil has the power to kill the lice, but not the nits. Put any nits removed, onto a paper towel.  Once the removal of the nits is complete, place the paper towel containing the nits into a plastic bag. Tightly tie the bag closed & discard.
*** If many nits are present, a fine tooth comb is usefull in removing them as well, & much quicker.  Many people with fine hair find that fine tooth combs are quite useless.  People with fine hair often complain that the nits simply slip through the teeth of the comb making it nearly impssible to remove them.  If you find yourself identifying with this problem, apply a hair styling gel to the hair prior to combing with the fine tooth comb. The gel will "fatten up" the hair,  & make the removal of lice easier.  An "extra hold" gel will work best. ***
9)  In order to insure that headlice does not reinfest the head of the person who has just been treated it is essential that all clothing & linen as well as carpets, upholstery, rugs, pillows, mattresses & stuffed animals, etc. be treated as well. For instruction please be sure to read : http://www.geocities.com/headlicehelper/Killing_Lice_Throughout_the_Home.html
10)  Also in order to insure that headlice does not reinfest the head of the person who has been treated it is helpful to identify the source of the infestation of headlice as well, meaning the person one may have caught it from to begin with.  An example of why :   * If little Johnny or little Susie plays with little Bobby who infects them both with head lice,  little Johnny & little Susie should not be in contact with little Bobby after they have been treated unless little Bobby has been treated effectively as well.  In that ,  if little Bobby reinfects little Johnny & little Susie again, then little Johnny's  & little Susie's mommies will find themselves having to treat little Johnny & little Susie all over again.  *  Please be sure to read :http://www.geocities.com/headlicehelper/Trouble_Shooting_Reinfestations_of_Headlice.html
*** Clarifying shampoos are defined as any which claim to remove a buildup from the hair.  They are effective in removing excess oils, styling products, mineral deposits etc. If you look in your local super market type grocery store, or beauty supply store or where ever you would normally purchase a shampoo, this type of shampoo is common & should not be difficult to locate.  If you have a baby shampoo on hand, it is a decent substitute although not as concerntrated and soem are less effective in removing  excessive amounts of oil from the hair. ***
11)  It is very important to treat all members of the household of anyone who is found to have headlice.  Newly hatched lice are very tiny, translucent in color & therefore difficult to see with the naked eye.  If even one is present in the hair of another family member & not detected, the lice will reinfest the family & home.
** The above mentioned is not meant to replace methods of lice or nit removal.  The use of olive oil alone can not cure a head lice infestation.  It is only a method to be used in order to kill the lice, in order to contain them, in preparation of nit removal.  The most effective basic treatment of any  head lice infection is dependant on the removal of all lice   AND all nits (eggs).  The oldest & the only %100 effective  method of lice cures known,  is manual removal of all lice & nits either by hand removal, or through the use of a fine comb.  **
