In severe cases, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), hypnosis helps you review the events slowly and at your own pace. PTSD occurs when an event happens so quickly and sets up such a fear response that the memory is difficult to access. This keeps the person in a severe state of reaction or trigger. Any associated sound, smell, emotion, triggers the fear response making it difficult to live your life at a normal level. We see this many times in the soldiers returning from active duty, in cases where one or more members of their troop have been killed while in an action that they themselves were in. These soldiers react to the merest sound or behaviour of the people around them. A phrase or an odour may send them into a state where in their minds they have returned to the action. Self preservation is their first and foremost goal! Because they never quite make it all the way through the memory they never resolve the emotional issues behind them. In fact it is those emotions that keep them from the memories! Their lack of understanding prevents them from disarming the triggers. They are stuck in a state where their lives feel in mortal danger, never quite feeling safe in their environment, never feeling at ease. The severity of the trauma makes no difference.
