TV, who needs it?

by Traute Klein, AKA biogardener

Don't be a slave to the TV set. Have the courage to explore other ways of enriching your life. One of my readers shares her family's experience with us.

    My Own Experience

Well, we have a TV, but I don't watch it. As I am sitting in front of my computer, the TV set is behind me. I can hear it, but not see it. Even if I turn around, I would only see the side of the set. And you know what? It does not bother me in the least. We had no TV in the house until 1972 because no one wanted it. When there is someone practicing a different musical instrument in every room of the house, there simply is no room and no time for TV.

A Reader Shares Her Family's Experience

One of my readers and long-time cyber-friends has given me permission to share her family's experience with TV-free week. This is what she wrote about one of their experiences:
As a family we prayed, danced, read, got our homework in on time, with extra credit work, played and practiced our music, played board games, cleaned our closets and bedrooms, and most important we talked to each other.
And later, she added the following:
The best that I can remember is that we really enjoyed each other, in fact, we didn't miss the TV at all. One of the best things that has come from our family turning off the tube is that we do it now on a regular basis. We don't go through withdrawals if there isn't anything on. We busy ourselves around the house, play music, write music, practice music, praise the Lord, pray, eat healthier and together, learn on the computer, and our minds aren't plugged full of unnecessary information. Our focus became more clear. My children did better in school that week. Their reading was more in depth. We talked, shared stories, laughed, and read the Bible out loud to each other. We actually got to know one another again. It was a good 7 days. And we will be doing it again soon! I can only speak on behalf of my family and how it worked for us. It was wonderful. I would advise everyone I know to try it some time. And like I said, one of the best things is that now we turn the TV off more then on! A habitual cycle had been broken.

    TV or no TV Poll

      TV, who needs it?
Are you addicted to TV or can you take it or leave it? Have you tried to get along without it? Would you be willing to try? How long do you think you will last?
I don't think that I can live without TV.
One day at a time without TV is all I can take.
I try at least a whole week without it once a year.
I often just listen to TV without watching.
I don't have a TV in the house.
