Reflexology works to stimulate the body's healing by directing pressure and massage to specific areas of the foot. The feet contain reflex points for all the major organs and glands. The reflexologist may even be able to, without a diagnosis, tell you which organs in your body are in need of extra support by what they feel in the treatment.
Our feet are meant to have a considerable amount of stimulation but because we are walking the majority of time in shoes, our feet do not connect with the earth in the same way. Ordinarily our body would receive similar stimulation to what the reflexologist provides just by walking barefoot across a field!
The fact that we have reflex points to all our organs on our feet is a reminder that being active is important for our overall health and that stagnation will affect the health of every organ and gland in our body. Stagnation leads to congestion of the body, congestion leads to dis-ease and illness sets in. For the average healthy individual, having a physically active life is vital to health.
Perhaps the most beneficial situation to seek out a reflexologist is with someone who is unable for walk. The therapy would in a sense replace the stimulation they are missing. Perhaps in the future we will see more practitioners of reflexology in the hospital setting to provide therapy until they are able to get up and walk again.
