Your Sin Remains
“But now you say, “we see”, your sin remains.”- John 9:41
These words of Jesus come at the conclusion of John's account of Jesus giving sight, then faith, to a man born blind. The Pharisees had asked, “Are we also blind?” Jesus replied, “If you were blind, you would have no sin. But now you say, ”we see”, your sin remains.” What did Jesus mean by, “if you were blind, you would have no sin”?
Being physically blind causes a person to “see” their dependence upon the Lord. The man who had been born blind had learned that fundamental truth – the Pharisees had not. Their sin remained because they did not see their need for the Lord to take it away.
Our knowledge of scripture may blind us to self-reliance, just as it did them.
If we don't see our continuing sinfulness and need of forgiveness – our sin remains. Only in turning to Jesus, relying upon him, as the man with new-found sight, is our sin taken away. “ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us…”
Jesus saw their pride and condescension. What does he see in me?
