Heart and Mom Baby
from Star Studio Magazine (May Issue)

By Danny Vibas

BECAUSE she grew up in Daly City in California, USA, you'd think Heart Evangelista is the type who would insist on living independently and away from her parents as soon as she turns 18. Thats the cultural practice amomng the dominant culture in that part of the world. Well, Heart did turn 18 last Feb 14 and tot his day, she's still happily living with her family - and enjoying an enviable bondin with her mom, Chic Evangelista-Ongpauco (yup, Heart is an Ongpauco, the clan famous for Filipino-themed restaurants).

"If my mom hadn't supported my dream of becoming an actress, I wouldn't be here at all," reveals Heart.

Her dad wasn't very keen about her joining showbiz. Nevertheless was her mom at first. "But mothers have softer hearts for their daughters, so somehow I was able to persuade my mom to support my dream and she has been my number one ally in almost everything I do in showbiz," she further reveals..

"I was only 16 going on 17 when I learned about auditions going on at ABS-CBN 2 for a new batch of young stars. I wasn't allowed to venture all the way to Quezon City with just the driver to accompany me. So it was my mom who went with me back-and-forth to the Talent Center for the auditions and the workshops," recalls Heart.

It's the Ongpaucos, not the Evangelistas, who are close to showbiz as several of Heart's uncles are married (or were once married) to movie stars, so it's somehow ironic that it was Heart's mom who was initially more supportive of her showbiz ambitions. This allowed mom and duaghter to bond.

Now that Heart is one of ABS-CBN biggest stars, she continues to bond with mom Alma by spending as much time as possible. Publicly, she usually accompanies Heart to showbiz affairs. Privately, they find time to do such girlie things such as putting on makeup. Close to each other, they never run out of bonding moment. That's why Heart and mom Alma are one of the closest daughter-mom tandem in showbiz.
