Kaito is a fourteen year old junior high school student who is in the same class as Lucia. He is a handsome, extremely gifted surfer who is well liked by girls [and women!] Although Kaito's’s heart could choose from many girls, he had already chosen someone early on in his life. Shortly after Lucia appears in Kaito's’s life, a glowing mark appears on his forehead that releases a bright light.

Kaito’s life was saved by a mermaid seven years ago after a large tidal wave drowned the cruise ship he was on, killing both his parents. Ever since he first met her, he has spent his life looking for her. After she saves him again, he became obsessed with finding her. However, Kaito has also been growing close to a cute girl in his class named Lucia. Kaito knows that eventually he will have to choose between his mysterious mermaid and Lucia, and he fears this, not knowing that they are the same person. Kaito's’s fear eventually catches up with him when Gaito appears to him in a dream, asking him which of the two his heart chooses.

As if Kaito already didn’t have enough problems, between his love life, his horrible headaches, lunatics appearing to him in dreams, and monsters attacking him left and right, he gets another problem to deal with in Episode 30. His mother's younger sister [his aunt] hands him a letter on Christmas Day. In the letter, Kaito’s parents told him that he was never their real son, but instead, they found him wrapped in a blanket of light on the beach. From the beginning, they knew Kaito was not a normal child because he always healed very fast, whether it was an injury or sickness.
