Museums
Inconfidência Museum is housed in the antique building that once served as the Municipal Hall and later as the Jail of Vila Rica.
The building's construction, planned by Luiz da Cunha Menezes, began in 1785 and lasted for seventy years.
The building also served as a Prison for the state of Minas Gerais .
It was inaugurated as a museum in 1942.
On its main floor you will find a monument which holds the mortal remains of the participants in the revolutionary effort known as the Inconfidência Mineira.
The Museum's diverse collections, officially opened in 1944, can be separated into two distinct groups: the main floor and the upper floor.
Th main floor houses original manuscripts from the Inconfidência Mineira, as well as items reflecting the cultural expression and involvement of Minas Gerais.
The upper floor houses religious artifacts and a precious collection of Brazilian furniture from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Museum also feature an annex, the former house of the colonial era jailers, where you will find an auditorium and a temporary exhibition room.
It also has a cultural center where a specialized library, a historical archive, a restoration room, and education center can be found.
Casa dos Contos
The ancient tax collecting house is considered one of the bet examples of Brazilian colonial architecture.
It served as the residence of João Rodrigues de Macedo, the representative tax collector of the Minas captaincy.
Later, the house served many diverse purposes.
It functioned as jail for the Inconfidentes (revolutionaries - where Cláudio Manoel da Costa died), the Royal Treasury in 1803, and the Headquarters of the Division of Property Owners.
In 1973, it was inaugurated as a museum, an exibition room, and as a center for the studies of the Gold Cycle.
Casa Guignard Museum
This museum, created in 1987, proposes to collect and exhibit the works of Alberto da Veiga Guignard, a painter who spent the last years of his life in Ouro Preto, and who contributed greatly to the education of many generations of Mineiran artists.
The Museum usually houses temporary and/or seasonal exhibitions.
Museum of Miniature
Located in the village of Amarantina, this museum houses miniature replicas of some of Brazil's principal architectural monuments.
It allows you to travel through the rich history of Brazil through scale models which were built with the same materials as the original monuments.
All of the replicas were created with extreme precision and with the utmost detail by local artists.
