Why, Firefly?

Meish Goldish
Glowing, glowing in the night,
Fireflies shine a yellow light.
Flashing signals to their mates,
Such a bright sight each creates!
Glowing, glowing in the night,
Fireflies shine a yellow light.

In the soft dark night
when the wind is still
and bullfrogs croak
at the bottom of the hill,
the fireflies reach
inside their coat pockets
and screw little light bulbs
into their sockets
so they can fly
through the night and play
without bumping their heads
or losing their way.

The firefly has little rings
That circle all around
Its body where a large supply
Of chemical is found.
I try so hard to understand,
And though I ask it why
It makes a glowing light so bright,
It gives me no reply.
What light it makes will not burn up,
It will just go and go.
With every little changing spark,
A brighter one will glow.
Six-legged insects are such fun
To watch and read about.
Perhaps someday I'll be the one
To find their secrets out.

One night a little firefly
Was looking at a star,
And said - but no one heard him -
"I wonder what you are."
Then, eager for adventure,
And brave as he could be,
He trimmed his little lantern
And flew away to see!
Elizabeth Maddox Roberts
A little light is going by,
Is going up to see the sky,
A little light with wings.
I never could have thought of it,
To have a little bug all lit
And made to go on wings.

When darkness falls in summertime,
The avenues of air
Are full of glowworm motor cops.
They're zipping everywhere.
With flashlights snapping on and off,
They signal: Left! or Right!
Directing Bugland traffic jams
On highways of the night!
unknown
Although the night is damp,
The little firefly ventures out,
And slowly lights his lamp.

FIrefly, firefly in the night,
when you flash your twinkly light,
do you know as you flit by
you're a beetle, not a fly?
FIrefly, firefly in the dark,
do you know you have no spark,
not a spark of fire at all . . .
just a light that's cool and small?
Firefly, firefly, please come by
underneath the darkened sky,
blinking as you flit along . . .
even if you're name is wrong.

"Oh, Grandpa, what's a firefly
That twinkles in the park?
Why does the glowworm shine
So brightly in the dark?"
"A glowworm is a firefly,"
My grandpa said to me.
"On glowworms there aren't any wings
Like fireflies, you see."
"Some people call them lightning bugs.
What is your favorite name?
A lightning bug or firefly?
We know they are the same."
"But Grandpa, you did not explain
What makes them give a light;
And do they ever catch on fire
Or get too warm at night?"
My grandpa said, "A firefly
Has rings that circle 'round.
Inside of it, amazingly,
A chemical is found."
"Just how that chemical can burn
Has puzzled wisest men,
Because you see, it won't burn up.
It comes right back again!"
Burn, spark, and change,
As fast as that and quicker!
"Say, Grandpa, now I understand
What makes the firefly flicker."
"Yes, that is true," my grandpa said.
"We'd like to know as well,
How we could make cold light like theirs.
A firefly won't tell!"

Firefly, firefly,
Wow, how you glow!
Under your body
You light up below!
Firefly, firefly,
Wow, how you shine!
At night in the dark
I can see you just fine!
