GENERAL INFORMATION FOR CLASS

Displacement: 22,437 tons/design, 24,312 tons/maximum
Length: 167.2 m. Beam: 28.5 m. Draught: 8.9 m.
Main Armament: Twelve 30.5 cm quick firing guns of 50 calibres length, arranged in six double gun turrets, one each bow and stern, two on each beam.

Fourteen 15 cm quick firing guns of 45 calibres length in casemates, number reduced to twelve from about 1916-17. Two 88 mm single mount anti-aircraft guns mounted from 1914. Six 50 cm torpedo tubes arranged one each bow and stern, two on each beam, all underwater.
Armor: Armoured traverse bulkheads: stern/90mm, vital parts/235-300/mm, bow/235mm ...Side armour: from stern to bow, 0-120-300 (tapered upwards to 170)-120-0 all dimensions in mm...Citadel armour: from stern to bow, 0-100-170-120 all dimensions in mm...Horizontal armour: armoured deck 55mm with 80mm inclines...Heavy guns: barbettes/270mm, turrets-front/300mm, sides/250mm, top/170-100mm...Casemates: 80-170mm...Conning tower: front/400mm, rear/200.
Machinery: Fifteen naval boilers feeding three, four cylinder, triple expansion reciprocating engines. Output of 28,000 i.h.p. at 20.0 knots. Supplementary oil firing added 1915, with 197 tons normal reserves. Three propellers, two parallel rudders. Trial run results: HELGOLAND 20.8 kn/31,258 ihp; OSTFRIESLAND 21.2 kn/35,500 ihp; THÜRINGEN 21.0 kn/34,944 ihp; OLDENBURG 21.3 kn/34,394 ihp.
Fuel reserves: 886 tons coal/normal, 3150 tons coal/maximum.
Radius of action: 3600 nautical miles at 18 knots.
Additional General Information for Class:
The only class of German dreadnaughts to have three funnels, these ships were designed in 1907 and 1908, and were originally designated as replacements for the obsolete ships Siegfried, Oldenburg, Beowulf, and Frithjof. The class had turrets arranged as aboard the Nassau class, but with calibre increased to 30.5cm (12 inch). These sisters cost the German taxpayers an average of RM46,000,000.

Mar.5/6.16 sortie to the Hoofden...Apr.24.16 escorted battle cruisers to the operation against Lowestoft and Yarmouth...May.31.16 battle of Jutland during which she received one hit...repaired at Kaiserliche Werft in Wilhelmshaven and reported ready for sea Jun.16.16...Aug.19.16 actions against easst coast of England...Oct.19.16 action against Dogger Bank... Apr.23.18 sortie to the North Sea...deleted from Navy List Aug.5.20 and delivered to British...scrapped 1924.
S.M.S. Ostfriesland

Ship's History:
Hoofden and escort duties as for Helgoland...May.31.16 battle of Jutland, struck mine on return voyage Jun.1.16...repaired at Wilhelmshaven and reported ready for sea Jul.26.16...coastal attacks, Dogger Bank and North Sea operations as for Helgoland...deleted from Navy List Nov.5.19 and delivered to United States...used as target for aerial bombs near Cape Henry, Virginia. First used as such Jul.20.21, being hit 13 times with bombs weighing 115-1000 kg. Next day targeted again, directly hit three times with 500 kg bombs. She was leaking, and was settling forward about one meter in four hours, but was not fatally damaged. Six 1000 kg bombs were dropped, and although there were no hits, one landed very near the ship, and she then sank in approximately ten minutes. An interesting experiment, but it should be remembered that the ship was not manouvering, nor was she returning anti-aircraft fire.

Hoofden and escort duties as for Helgoland...May.31.16 batle of Jutland, received one medium hit, repaired and reported ready for sea Jun.16.16... coastal attacks, Dogger Bank and North Sea operations as for Helgoland... deleted from Navy List Nov.5.19 and was to be delivered to Japan but that nation waived its rights to the ship and she was sold to the British on whose orders she was scrapped in Dordrecht, 1921.
