Shopping on-line can be fun, particularly if you remember that cyberspace mimics what you know of the real world. Friendly clerks and surly ones. Merchants that do all they can to please and the take-it-or-leave-it-as-it-as-you-found-it ones. Strangers that run after as you leave to bring counter change you forgot to retrieve, pickpockets and sophistocated thieves. Generally, it's suggested that cyber-shoppers reserve one credit card for that purpose alone so on-line statements are simple to reconcile and the cost of a number compromised is minimized or nil, depending on the carrier involved. The elderly woman, for instance, who had a lovely red jaguar charged to her American Express card was not required to pay for it; AE called before the transaction completed to question politely her sudden apparent fancy for the good life of the young. If you're uncomfortable using a credit card on-line, merchants list toll-free numbers and send catalogues for shopping by mail. And there's always the corner store, the local fair and county flea market, and scattered earth-to-sky soul shops too.
