"To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend."
Job 6:14
"That Boy in the Wheel Chair"
John sat all alone in the parlor most of the time. He was slightly hunchbacked, and he had trouble with his spine, which would not allow him to play actively as most of the boys in the orphanage. He could not read much, for his eyes were weak, so mostly he just sat and thought about the times when his big strong father had carried him about when his bac hurt, and read to him when he was tired.
All this happiness was in the past, though, for father had died, and mother had to work away from home and could not care for him, so she had placed him in the orphanage. She came to see him whenever she could, but that was not often.
The boys pushed him around in his wheel chair some, but they were in school and out playing, so John sat most of the day just doing nothing.
One day some boys from a club came to visit the orphanage. They played games with the other boys out in the yard for a while, then they came inside. John had watched them through the window as they played outside. Then as the boys came in, one of them spied John. "Hey," he called, "why didn't you come out and play? Did you have to stay in because you've been bad?" He didn't notice John's wheel chair, or his crooked back. One of the orphanage boys whispered quickly to the nwecomer, "He can't. He's crippled."
The boy's face flamed red and he began to apologize to John.
"I'm so sorry I said what I did." John felt bad to see him so embarassed.
"Don't be," said John. "I've always been lame, and I'm used to it."
"Say," said the boy, "you have lots of time to read, don't you? boy, I'd like that. I never get time to read as much as I'd like to."
"Can't," said John. "Eyes won't take it."
"What do you do, then"?
"Nothing, mostly."
Said the boy, "You need a radio to listen to. Don't have have one?" He looked around.
"No, we don't," said John.
"Oh." The boy was silent for a moment, then he bade John good-by. "I'll see you again sometime."
On the way home those boys talked the matter over. "Say, fellows," said one, "I think John ought to have a radio. He has nothing to do. A radio would be a wonderful help to him. Can't we save our money and get one for him? It wouldn't cost much if we'd all help."
The boys were enthusiastic. They began a campaign of saving. And before many weeks passed they had enough money to buy a small radio to John. They took it out to the orphanage, where the news spread like wildfire. In a moment the parlor was buzzing with boys. With his face shining, John tuned in his radio and they all sat and listened.
From then on John was no longer such a lonely boy. His radio brought him contact with the world that he had never had before. While the boys were away from the orphanage he had something to do. And when the boys were there, one or more often joined him in listening to the little radio. John now had what he had so longed for -- something to do.
Again God had provided for the needs of one of His children through the loving-kindness of friends who felt pity for one who was afflicted.

"....Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.' So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them...." -- Genesis 26-27, New International Version
"....Father of day, Father of night,
Father of black, Father of white,
Father, who build the mountain so high,
Who shapeth the cloud up in the sky,
Father of time, Father of dreams,
Father, who turneth the rivers and streams...." -- Father of Night by Bob Dylan

"Mine is the secret that opens upon the door of youth and mine is the Cup of the Wine of Life and the Caldron of Cerridwen, which is the Holy Grail of Immortality. I am the Gracious Goddess who gives the gift of joy unto the heart of man upon earth. I give the knowledge of the Spirit Eternal, and beyond death I give peace and freedom and reunion with those that have gone before.... I who am the beauty of the Green Earth, and the White Moon amongst the stars and the mystery of the Waters, and the desire of the heart of man, I call unto thy soul to arise and come unto me. For I am the Soul of Nature who giveth life to the universe; from me all things proceed and unto me all things must return.... I have been with thee from the beginning, and I am that which is attained at the end of desire." -- Book of Shadows
"...So let our sacrifice rise before you today,
And fully follow after you,
For those who trust in you will not be disappointed.
So now we follow you with all our hearts; we revere you
And seek your face. Do not disappoint us,
But deal with us in your forbearance
And your abundant mercy.
Deliver us in your wonderful way,
And glorify your name, Lord;
May all who do your slaves harm be disgraced;
May they be put to shame and lose all their power and might,
And may their strength be broken.
Let them know that you are the Lord God alone,
Glorious over the whole world."

"... And Jesus was a sailor/ when he walked upon the water/ And he spent a long time watching/ from his lonely wooden tower/ And when he knew for certain/ only drowning men could see him/ He said All men shall be sailors then/ until the sea shall free them/ but he himself was broken/ long before the sky would open/ forsaken, almost human/ he sank beneath your wisdom like a stone/ And you want to travel with him/ you want to travel blind/ and you think maybe you'll trust him/ for he's touched your perfect body/ with his mind" -- Suzanne, Leonard Cohen

that your Dark Nights of the Soul may bring you awareness and knowledge.
That you may at the last find someone to take on your light and set you

"Last year, Mr. Cao [Maobing] was in trouble with authorities after he protested against corruption and tried to organize fellow workers into an independent trade union. In December, one day after he spoke with foreign reporters about his complaints, the police took him to a psychiatric hospital, where he has been medicated and forced to undergo electroshock therapy, said relatives and friends who insist that he is not insane but a determined advocate. The hospital director says a committee of 17 experts has declared that Mr. Cao suffers 'paranoid psychosis.'
Even given such cases, Mr. Munro said official data indicated that China's political use of psychiatric confinement had declined significantly in the 1990's, before Falun Gong was banned a year and a half ago.
Now, he said, 'the new repression of Falun Gong has sounded a loud warning bell....
The mental-pathology model is being extended to religious nonconformists,' Mr. Munro charged. He calls this a potentially ominous harbinger as China enters an era of rapid social change." --
