Warrensburg's First Citizen
She was born in "Old Town' and lived there all her life. She was very poor. Most of her neighbors were negroes. And she was blind. Yet truthfully she was Warrensburg's first citizen. Catherine Calhoun Rentch was her name.
Literally she was first, by being the oldest person in Warrensburg who was born here. February 22, 1848, was her birthday. But her great preminence was not in the length of time she was here, but in the enormous success she achieved in that time.
She lived fifty years in a two room house and loved it more all the time. For years she had an income of only $25 a month from a blind pension. A month before she died, lying blind and helpless, nearly eighty years old, she said: "People are mighty good to me. They come in here to see me, but they can't do anything for me. I have all I want." Miss Kitty never married.
