James was seven years old when his father-George bought a farm in the Grimes, Va., area and a house was built. James was a farmer. In 1830, he built a two-story log cabin for his two unmarried daughters-Eliza and Flora. This house still stands today, being restored by James grandson-Herbert Taylor.Upon the death of his father, he inherited the family farm .In 1864, James married Margarita Pifer, of Frederick Co., Va. She died in 1890. They had five children, the last, Homer Brooke, to carry on the Taylor line. In 1891, James married Ida Brurridge Brown. The couple had no offspring. James continued to live in the family house until his death in 1913. Besides raising his own children, he also boarded his first wife's sister- Miriam Colvin for 30 years, until her death in 1875. Also the 1880 census shows James boarding his niece/nephew (David Taylor) Ann & Edward Taylor.
