Course description from official bulletin:
Designed to provide the student a basic foundation in the fundamentals of algebra. Major components
include: real number system, operations with signed numbers, operations with algebraic expressions,
special products and factoring, operations with fractions and first degree equations in one variable.

Purpose of the course:
To prepare the student for College Algebra

Goals:	At the end of the course the student will be able to
1	Simplify arithmetic expressions using Order of Operations
2	Simplify algebraic expressions by combining like terms
3	Solve linear equations and inequalities in one variable
4	Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on polynomials
5	Factor polynomials by using the Greatest Common Factor, Factoring By Grouping,
Un-FOIL-ing and by recognizing the Difference of Two Squares
6	Solve second-degree equations in one variable by Factoring, Square Root Rule, Completing
the Square, and the Quadratic Formula (over the real numbers)
7	Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on rational expressions
8	Perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on radical expressions
9	Solve equations with rational or radical expressions (linear or quadratic)
10	Graph linear equations and inequalities in two variables
11	Write the equation of a line given the slope and a point or two points
12	Solve a linear system of 2 equations in 2 variables by graphing, elimination or substitution
13	Solve applications involving any of the above

Required Materials:
"Beginning Algebra Second Edition" by Martin-Gay, Published by Prentice Hall

Expectations:	To become good at anything, one must practice. To learn mathematics, one
must do problems. Homework will be assigned and collected each class. Homework
should be neat and complete (with work shown). I want to see, not just a neat answer,
but how you got that answer.
I expect you to be present, on time and prepared each day. You should have
all class materials including due assignments. You should read the book as any material
in the book is possible test material whether it has been covered in class or not.

Methods of Student Evaluation:
	Four hourly exams 400 points
Weekly Quizzes (may not be made up) 100 points
	Homework 200 points
	Final Exam 200 points

A	90% of total Absences (any absence is discouraged)
B	80% of total Your first 2 absences will not be questioned.
C	70% of total Absences beyond the first 2 may result in a
D	60% of total lowered grade or dismissal from the class
