Houston/Harris County Basset Rescue
Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you get all of these dogs ?
They come from many places. Some are "owner release" which are dogs given up by the owner, usually due to job transfers or other changes in their lives that require they find the dog a new home. Many of the dogs come from animal shelters and a few are brought to us by people who find them wandering the streets, obviously abandoned or lost.
What kind of shape are the dogs in when you get them ?
That really depends on where they come from. Owner release dogs are almost always in great shape, but the dogs we get from other places may or may not be in good shape when we get them. The most common problems we encounter are malnutrition and heart worms, both of which are fully treatable. We also see a lot of infections of different kinds, which are also treatable. Generally a lot of love and care, a good diet and good medical attention will bring the dog back to excellent condition. Remember that our job is to take care of all of these problems prior to adoption so that each dog is happy and health at adoption time.
Is there an adoption fee ?
Yes, there is a $75.00 adoption fee, which we pass directly to our Veterinarian. I wish I could say that the adoption fee pays him back for all the work he does, but the truth is that it does not. Our Vet, Jersey Village Animal Hospital, has helped us out every time we have needed it. They are the best ! (excuse the plug, but we owe them so very much for all they have done !)
Who can adopt a dog ?
Just about anyone who can provide a good, safe and loving home for the dog. We insist that the dog be allowed inside your home and that you have a safe area for the dog to play. This usually means a fenced yard or similar area. You must also be willing and able to provide health care for the dog, including yearly vaccinations and you must keep the dog licensed in your area. You will be asked to sign a contract stating these and other obligations at adoption time.
Do you euthanize those dogs that you can't find homes for ?
Absolutely not ! Once a dog is in our program it remains in our program until a new home can be found. We would only consider euthanasia in cases where the dog was suffering greatly and it could not be treated. So far we have not had that happen, thank God.
Will you take any Basset into your program ?
Yes, big or small, young or old, healthy or not they are all welcome.
Where do you get your support from ? Do you take donations ?
We get support from many places. From veterinary care to dog food our support comes from individuals and corporations that believe in what we do. At this time we do not take cash donations, however we always need more foster homes and people who can donate their time to pick up dogs and help out in other ways.
