Here 'N There

by Art Walter

Following the recent publicity on Kingfisher county's blood-soaked strip or US 81 from the Cimarron River bridge south over the overpass, we checked with the Department of Public safety to find out just how bad the two-mile section really is.

Here is the record since January 1, 1954.

On the overpass there have been 17 wrecks, seven of which were personal injury accidents. One was killed in a fatal crash. There was a total of nine persons injured in the 17 accidents.

A like number, 17, accidents have occurred at the bridge. There have been no fatalities at this spot. Five at the bridge were personal injury accidents with a total of nine injured.

It was impossible to secure an accurate estimate on the property damage involved in the 34 crashes. If an estimate of $500 damage to each car was to be used this would mean a total of property damage running at $17,000. Including cost of treating the injured and the loss of time involved, the expense of this bloody two miles could well have cost the motoring public in excess of $50,000.

Those people in this county who are interested in better roads and public safety could well begin to see that this strip of highway is brought up to adequate condition.

According to Sam Snyder, local 5c and 10c magnet, he has been sweeping sidewalks in Hennessey since 1912. Thay makes some 47 years of service. When asked how many brooms he had worn out, he replied that "he had no idea." Maybe when he reaches his fifieth year arrangements could be made to pin a ribbon on Snyder.

The Lacy 4-H club has built a very nice display on farm safety in the local Farm Bureau window. The scene depicts graves of several individuals who have met accidental deaths. The epitaphs are styled in the same manner of the clever ones in boot hill at Dodge City.
