The discipline of Accounting comprises a rigorous body of knowledge which includes financial and managerial accounting, taxation, and auditing. The program is particularly well suited for those students who wish to prepare for a career as: 1) practising professional accountants and auditors, tax consultants, or internal auditors; or 2) financial officers or controllers in corporate enterprises or in public institutions.
The program does not attempt to produce completely qualified professionals. This role is filled by the professional accounting bodies and usually requires experience and further training in a practical environment. The role of the university is to provide academic preparation in those bodies of knowledge and analytical skill which will form a sound base upon which specialist professional knowledge and practice can be built. Thus, the program is one of some specialization in the accounting area within the general framework of a degree in business administration. Detailed information about the opportunities, program requirements, and exemption policies of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, the Certified General Accountants, and the Society of Management Accountants Programs may be obtained from the Undergraduate Office.
Because the program is rigorous, students should have demonstrated an ability to do well in core courses in the area. Students with less than a 65% standing in Commerce 290 (Quantitative Methods), 291 (Statistics), 293 (Financial Accounting), 294 (Managerial Accounting), and 297 (Finance) are strongly advised not to select the Accounting Option. Students entering the option should have demonstrated good analytical ability in non-accounting courses.
