Hotline News

Magazines (Weekly or Monthly)

Equity Magazine (not being updated)
It's my favorite magazine, but it hasn't been the same since Michael Campbell left as Managing Editor. I'm sure that they would have more than one article available here if Michael were still running the place.
Of special interest to Commerce students - you can find out why Dean Goldberg wears those God-awful neckties (er, I mean wonderfully fashionable neckties) at this site.

Macleans Magazine
My third-favorite magazine, behind Equity and B.C. Business. A second, less impressive home is located here.

Business In Vancouver - Today's Headlines
It's not very thorough, but its free.

Time

Fortune Magazine
I generally don't read American magazines, but why complain if it's free?

Am I Canadian?
Have you ever questioned your identity? Here's a page that will instantly tell you whether or not red and white blood cell run through you both figuratively and literally.

WWWF Grudge Match
I think it's funny, but I suppose it's not for everyone. Commerce students don't quite have enough time to maintain something like this. It really makes me wonder if science students don't have enough to learn. Of particular interest to advocates of the adversarial system.

David Letterman's Top Ten Lists
A complete listing of The Late Show's Top Ten Lists.

Night Stand Home Page
Sick of Sally? Repulsed by Ricki? Miffed by Montel? Scared of Springer? Well, maybe this is the show for you. Truly, this is the anti-talk show. See Dick Dietrick (played by Tim Stack) poke fun at the crap my sister watches.

Yeeeoww!!! Digital Lampoon
From the people who brought you Yecch!!!, a parody of Yahoo! I particularly like Senor CPU, but he doesn't seem to answer his questions on a regular basis.

Harold Reynolds' Home page
A lot of things about pets, but still funny.

Fun e-Mail
Pronounced "funny mail" as opposed to "fun email". This guy is really twisted.

Politically Correct Bedtime Stories
Alternatively, you can call it "Politically Correct B.S."
The real purpose of this site is to sell you things, but it's still worth a look.

Personalized Shakespearean Insults
According to my spell-checker, that is the correct way of spelling "Shakespearean".
Remember, each insult you receive is personalized!

The Surrealist Compliment Generator
A good place to go if you need a little humility.

A List of Other Humour Sites
I can't compete with this guy.

Mr. Bean!

Truly a cult figure here in Canada.

Mark Riddell's Mr. Bean Page
Probably the best Mr. Bean page on the 'net.

Official Mr. Bean Site (UK)
Info on Mr. Bean's first big-screen spectacular.

Alex Grey's Mr. Bean Page
Pete Tandon's Mr. Bean Page

Mr. Bean for Prime Minister of Canada
I don't know if the Chief Electoral Officer (Jean-Pierre Kingsley) will like this page - you can't vote directly for the P.M. in Canada (In the Westminster parliamentary system, the leader of the party with the most seats in the House of Commons is chosen to become the Prime Minister).
Hurry - you have to get your vote in before September 1, 1996.

Every Rowan Atkinson Video, Audio, or Book Appearance

Mr. Bean Pictures

Mr. Bean Sounds
Considering the fact that Mr. Bean doesn't say very much, these soundbytes are fairly valuable.

Star Trek Sites

What can I say? I'm hooked on Star Trek, but I tried kept this section to a minimum.

Preview the next Star Trek: Deep Space 9
Preview the next Star Trek: Voyager
Paramount's official releases. I like the fact that they tell you if they're going show a re-run.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Episode List
The Concise Star Trek Episode Guide

The Daily Star Trek Test
You are given a picture and have to identify which episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation it came from. I think I watched too much of that damned show - I can do surprisingly well.

The Star Trek: TNG Plot Generator
Gives you plot to a TNG story that didn't quite make it onto television.
Press your "reload" button to get a new plot.

The Women of Star Trek

This collection includes previews of the Enterprise-E (the starship that will be in the next Trek movie).

It's the official site, but you have to subscribe to MSN if you want to get to the interesting content (grr…).

Want to learn Klingon? Get yourself some napkins, then check out these two places:
Klingon Language FAQ
The Klingon Language Institute
If you can believe it, most of the people who study Klingon are people genuine linguists, not Star Trek fans!

The Capt. James T. Kirk Sing-a-long Page
Scary. My loyalties become divided when it comes to Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.

Toronto Stock Exchange Quotes

Michael Campbell's MoneyTalks
I really like Michael Campbell. I don't think that ever would have entered the business world if it wasn't for Michael. He does a very good job of explaining fairly complicated business issues to "normal" people. His website is filled with useful information and advice (but you should come to expect that from him).

KPMG Canada
I heartily encourage you to subscribe to their Tax Tip of the Day.

Ernst & Young Canada

Canadian Internet Business Directory

CANOE Money
Check out the current rates for savings, mortgages, term deposits, and more!

Futureworth

TD Bank
Also known as the (expletive) I bank with. The only reason I keep my banks accounts here is that there are a lot of Green Machines in Vancouver (so I don't have to go far the two times a year I actually make withdrawals).
Why did I decide open my accounts here in the first place? I didn't - TD ate up the trust company I used to deal with, but I digress… Did you know that TD was one of only two major Canadian chartered banks that didn't hit the $1,000,000,000 mark in profits in 1995? Awww, what a pity…
Anyway, this site has apparently won quite a number of awards, so I suppose it's worth checking out.

The Vancouver Stock Exchange
A good place to put your money if you're not risk-averse (or if you're crazy).

Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association
It's Better Downtown!

Accounting Bodies

There are three of them in Canada. I'm sure you Americans out there are frightened by that fact. Can you imagine CPA's with identities? How about organizations trying to convince logical, young minds that accounting is exciting?

The Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia

The Certified Management Chartered Accountants of Canada

The Certified Management Accountants of British Columbia

The Certified General Accountants' Association of Canada

Canadian Governments

The Government of Canada
The official website of the Canadian Government. A pretty good site, especially if you consider the fact that a bunch of bureaucrats put it together.

The Government of British Columbia
One of only a few sites that I've seen that uses frames well. Hard to believe - something done surprisingly well by the government.

Debates of the House of Commons of Canada (Hansard)
The Hansard is a written record of what is said in the House of Commons. It ordinarily doesn't make for interesting reading, unless you have a lot of time on your hands.

The City of Vancouver
A lot of information is here, but I can't complain about my neighbour's very loud dog on-line.

Political Sites

The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada
Blame the temporary setback of this party to Brian Mulroney.

The Reform Party of Canada
Alternatively, if you're Preston Manning, it's better known as "The Refooorm Party of Canada, I love that word, Refooorm!!!"

The Liberal Party of Canada
You can give feedback to the government here.

The B.C. Liberal Party
The only party to vote for here in British Columbia, and not just because its leader is related to Michael Campbell.

Music Links

Rock 101 - CFMI Radio
Vancouver's home for Classic Rock. The bottom line reason I listen to this station is that they play the most Beatles in town (well, at least their later work). Plus, they don't play a lot of the crap that passes for music these days (but, despite my loyalty, I have never won a prize from them). Now laced with Real Audio!

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame + Museum
Imagine - a reason to go to Cleveland!

On-Line Music Database
It's fairly extensive, so don't get lost here.

The Beatles Information Page

Free Internet Services

The Anonymizer
Hides most of the information you reveal about yourself when you visit a website.
Directly Open a URL.

The Postcard Store
E-mail is a more efficient way of communicating with someone on the 'net, but this is more fun.

World of Cards
Similar service as The Postcard Store. Watch out for a slow download from The Netherlands.

Virtual Flowers
Send virtual flowers to someone you love (or hate or whatever…)

NetMind Free Services Home Page
An entire list of free Internet services - take a peek.

Build-A-Card
Make cards for holidays, birthdays, thank you cards, or just for fun!

POBoxes.com
These folks will forward your e-mail to any address for life (supposedly). I'm waiting for the day when this service stops, and all my mail ends up in oblivion (not that I'm being pessimistic).

The Phone Company (TPC.INT)
The folks here will send a fax for you anywhere in the world, as long as you're lucky enough to be sending it to a place that they're covering.

Fax FAQ

Free "Stuff"

So far, I've only received a large coffee mug, a postcard, and a useless C.D. from the links these sites provide, but there's more coming. Finding free things is a little hard for Canadians; unfortunately, a lot of free offers are only available to Americans.

Get a free Canadian Flag (offer over)
What's the Liberals' solution to anything? Spend money! (but I know you already knew that)
The bleeding hearts in the Ministry of Canadian Heritage (a waste in itself) want a million more Canadian flags to be flown by February of 1997, so they're giving them away. Oh well, if their going to waste even more of your tax dollars, you might as well take advantage of it.

Jackie's Free Stuff Links - Today's Stuff
List of items probably available to those outside of the US.

Scavenger's Quest
They constantly add new items, so it's worth checking out on a regular basis. If you want, they will notify you by e-mail, if they add new items.

alt.consumers.free-stuff - The Next Generation
alt.consumers.free-stuff - Deep Space 9
I really like the Star Trek allusions.

FREEway- Guide to FREE stuff

The Weekly Freebie Compilation

Free Stuff...That's Right Free Stuff
Yup, that's right, another link to even more free stuff.

Next to Nothing!
Mostly 1-800 numbers to call to get free things, but it does have a number of links to freebies.

Some Places Where I've Reeked Havoc

The University of British Columbia

U.B.C.'s Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration
A place where I'm currently reeking havoc.

Eric Hamber Secondary School (currently not available)
I think I spent half of my senior year here in room 308.
I wouldn't count on major improvements being made to this site anytime soon - it looks like Tim Ireland is the webmaster here (the turn-around time for one of his tests is about three years; I think I should stop by someday and check out my final grade for Accounting 11!).

Places You'll Wish You Never Visited

Useless WWW Pages
If you think this weaving this site was an exercise in futility, you ain't seen nothing yet! Come here to see what weird things people have come up with in their spare time.

Mirsky's Worst of the Web
I guess I'm promoting all the garbage that's on the Web by putting this link here, but that's okay - I put my CD collection on my page, after all.

Other Interesting Places

I can only describe this section as a "slush fund" of links (Hmmm, it doesn't go anywhere else, I guess I'll put it here!) I promise to stop thinking like a bureaucrat (at least until the next time).

Addicted To: Stuff

The Central Index of Canadian WWW Servers
I prefer going to their "list by scope", but that's me.

The Internet Pizza Server

The Amazing Fish Cam
Live cameras on two fish tanks at Netscape Headquarters.
You don't have to feed them or care for them in any other way - just click and watch.
If you're using Netscape Navigator, try pressing <Alt><Ctrl><F> - dirty, eh?

The Computer Paper
The best free computer magazine available. You can go directly to their what's new section.

Windows95.Com
Not an official Microsoft site (which makes it better). Lots of information on Windows 95 is available here, but I usually go for the free software.

NASA Shuttle Web
The Canadian Space Guide

QUICKcheck
Movie ratings from several major US newspapers.

Orcabay Sports and Entertainment
It's the company that owns the Vancouver Canucks, Vancouver Grizzlies, G.M. Place, and now, the Vancouver VooDoo (a roller hockey team). What really bugs me about Orcabay is that you can spend $70 per ticket on a Canucks game, and you still won't be in the best block of seats.

Name Dat Toon
Can you identify this week's song?

Vancouver CommunityNet

1996 Fall Television Schedule
See what the American Networks will be showing during prime time.

Auto-by-Tel
Don't buy a car before visiting this site!

Search Engines

Can't find what you want here? I recommend only a few other places:

Yahoo! or Yahoo! Canada
I think it's a more like a database of websites, as opposed to a search engine. Other places have a better chance of finding something you want to know about, but whatever Yahoo finds you is fairly organized.

Dogpile or Search.com
It's a hundred search engines all in one place. If you can't find it somewhere here, you won't be able to find it anywhere.

HumanSearch
If you can't find it yourself, ask someone else to do it for you.

Please sign my guestbook before leaving this site. You can also read my guestbook, if you like to do things like that.
