Baby Bonnet Pattern - Crochet

Shared with Arachne members by David Collyer

Dear Friends,
I've finally found what I was looking for! Yes, here's the pattern for the
bonnet which my Grandfather, Archibald COLLYER, crocheted for my father,
Keith, in 1917. It's a really beautiful design for which he would have used
Coats Mercer cotton #40 or #60. I reproduced it using #100 and it came out
large enough for a good sized doll.

Now we're going to have trouble with the difference between American and UK
names for crochet sts. These are UK/Australian names; perhaps someone else
can translate them into American.

The creator of this document is attaching interpretations. There are 2 of them and the 2 do differ in a small way.
*****************
As an English member of the crochet list I can probably help. Chain and slip-stitch are exactly the same in both terminologies, but thereafter the North American terms are one lower than the British/Australian ones.

The British go up from slip-stitch to double-crochet, but the North Americans go from slip-stitch to single-crochet. As a result, any British/Australasian term for dc or above needs reducing by one for North America (double becomes single, treble becomes double, etc).
*****************
With the exception of the chain stitch, which is the same in both UK and
US, the general rule seems to be:

USUK
slip stitchsingle crochet
single crochetdouble crochet
half double cro.half treble cro.
double cro.treble cro.
trebledouble treble
double trebletriple treble
