Tatted Cup and Saucer
Please do not duplicate without permission from Suzann Welker
The cup and saucer pattern were originally from an antique
Workbasket. I re-worked the pattern so there are no cut and joins. It
involves split rings and split chains (only real short ones).
The cup and saucer can work up as a cute Christmas ornament.
Made in size 10 thread it is quite large. I glued the cup to the saucer
and filled the cup with berries and moss and hung it from the saucer.
Also put a few small sprigs of holly etc. around the saucer.
R = ring
ds = double stitch
P = picot
J = Join
sp= split ring...numbers after the / are the unturned half of the sp.
sc= split chain
mock picot... with the thread in the chain position, make a ds leaving a
space equal to the other picots. Do not turn the first half of the ds,
second half of the ds as normal. You have climbed out of the ring and are in
position to start the next chain or ring.
Two shuttles wound in continuous thread. The pattern calls for size 10 or
size 5 thread. This makes a very large cup and saucer
Rnd 1: R 1 ds, 9 p sep by 1 ds. Cl r. Mock picot
Rnd 2: SP 2ds/2ds cl r.(do not reverse)
Leave extra shuttle attached to work
R 2 ds, 5 p sep by 1 ds, 2ds cl. Rev
R 2ds j to next p on round 1. Rev
R 2 ds J to last p of last large R, 4 p sep by 1 ds, 2ds cl. Rev.
Repeat around up till last large ring.
Last large ring is a sp. Sp 2ds, J to last p of last large R, 1 p/
2 ds J to first p of first large R, 1 p.
Close ring make a mock picot.
Rnd 3: SP 2ds p, 1ds p, 1ds/ 2ds p, 1ds p, 1ds. cl ring.
Chain: 3ds,p 3ds Rev.
R: 1ds, p, 1ds join to second p of last ring made,
2ds join to center p of next r in rnd 2,
2ds p, 1 ds, p, 1ds cl ring. Rev
Repeat around up to last ring.
Join last to previous ring and to first ring.Rev
SC(split chain) 3ds/3ds mock picot.
Rnd 4: Chain 7ds, j in p of next chain of round 3. 10 times.
Pull chains tight so the rim of the cup will be firm.
Do not cut threads make handle.
Handle:
Ch 6ds p, 6ds, 3 p sep by 4 ds, 4ds, join to p where rings are
joined in rnd 2 directly below starting of handle.
Pull chains tight.
Rw (ch 4ds, j to adjacent p of chain) 3 times,
ch 6 ds j to adjacent p of ch.
Ch 6 join into join at base of handle.
Knot threads and cut.
Glue down thread ends.

Saucer..
Rnd 1 Repeat Rnd of cup.
Rnd 2: SR 2ds/2ds do not rev
Ch 3ds p, 3ds rev
R 2ds join to next picot of Rnd 1, 2ds cl R. Rev
repeat around up till last chain
SC (split chain) 3ds/3ds mock picot
Rnd 3: SR 1ds, 3 p sep by 1ds/ 1ds 3 p sep by 1ds do not rev
CH 4 ds p, 4ds Rev
R 1 ds, 3 p sep by 1 ds, join to p of chain of rnd 2, 1 ds, 3 p sep
by 1 ds. Rev
Repeat up till last chain. Last chain is a split chain
SC (split chain) 4ds/4ds mock picot
Rnd 4: Ch 10 ds, j to next chain picot of Rnd 3.
Repeat around join to base of first chain of Rnd 4.
Saucer will be slightly concave.
