Meet Teak the Toller

Teak is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (Toller) who joined our pack in March of 1996 (that's him with his mum). His favorite activity is retrieving. It took him a while to catch on but now he loves retrieving - even more than liver and garlic bits. Teak started swimming when he was seven months. Normally he only swims to retrieve but on his inaugural pheasant hunting trip he swam across a creek on a recall.

He was in the Okotoks dog show and won jr. male toller (he was the only one) and came in third in the jr male puppy sweeps ( there were only 3 puppies). We got Teak on a Non-breeding registration so at 6 months he went to the vet to get "tutored". We did not feel the need to use Neuticles and other dogs haven't laughed at him yet. Unfortunately Teak really silvered as he aged, confirming that he is a buff toller. Very disappointing but now we can call him Blondie when he is being a goof.

Teak was a very suspicious and fearful of many noises as a young pup so Fred was afraid that he would turn out to be gun shy and timid. Teak's first hunting trip was very successful though with Teak bounding into cover and creeks to retrieve sticks. He flushed a pheasant on his second trip but wasn't sure what to do with it! Then whistles started blowing and Labs were getting yelled at so Teak retired to the truck.

He's a big dog now. He went through the adolesence stage with little problem. What really matured him was joining the local agility club. He got exposed to many different dogs which has built up his confidence to the point where he now protects Rufus. Rufus had enticed a friend's German Shepard into chasing him when Teak put a quick stop to that by running up and broadsiding the GSD. We were all surprised. He also runs with Teal (Fred's dad's crazy lab) and holds his own in the broadsiding play.

Teak is into agility. He's earned novice titles in standard and gamblers NADA agilty. Unfortunately he had immune mediated hepatitis in 2002 so now we just do a couple of runs on one day of an agility weekend. He is finally has a play partner at home as Milo loves to play.
